GLENSIDE, PA (October 20, 2021) -- Offensive struggles in the opening set doomed the King's College women's volleyball team as they dropped their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest, 3-0, at Arcadia University on Wednesday night. The Monarchs drop to 17-3 overall, 3-3 in MAC Freedom play, while the Knights improve to 11-15 overall, 4-3 in MAC Freedom action.
Arcadia led early in the opening set, 5-1, before King's inched within one, 5-4, with three unanswered points. The host Knights opened the scoring with a 10-4 run, leading 15-8. The Monarchs closed the deficit to three, 15-12, behind a kill from senior
Christie Brown and a service ace from first year
Carly Shire, but Arcadia recorded 10 of the last 12 points in the set to win set one, 25-14.
The Knights carried their momentum into the second set, leading 16-5. It seemed as the Knights would put the set away handily, but King's rallied back to within four, 23-19, off two kills from Brown. After trading points, Arcadia got the final point of the set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set saw the hosts leading 12-5, but the Monarchs continued to battle back, pulling within four points on several occasions down the stretch. A Knights error saw King's within three, 22-19, but after a kill from first year
Emma Monson the hosts finished the set with back-to-back points to win the final set, 25-20, and the game, 3-0.
Senior
Olivia Bunch led the Monarchs offense with eight kills and a team-high 11 digs. Fellow-senior
Danielle Kitchner added seven kills on 11 attempts, hitting .455, with a block, while Brown totaled five kills. Setter
Wiatt Hoffmann lent out 12 assists, and Shire and senior
Toni Galasso rounded out the defense with eight digs each.
Arcadia was led by Michelle Frank with a game-high 13 kills, Estefania Martinez-Sola dished out 30 assists, and Katie Paoli led with a match-high 12 digs.
As a team, the Monarchs hit .140 for the match, recording 25 kills on 86 attempts. King's added 22 assists on the 25 kills while totaling 41 digs and three aces.
King's is back at home on Saturday, October 23 for a tri-match with William Paterson and John Jay beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Monarchs will also be honoring its eight seniors on Saturday in McGrane Gymnasium.
