Strong First Half Leads Monarchs to Win Over FDU-Florham

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 23, 2021) -- The King's College football struck first on the rainy Saturday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, PA and held off a late surge from the visiting FDU-Florham Devils as they earned a 23-20 win in McCarthy Stadium. The Monarchs improve to 4-3 overall, 3-3 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play, while the Devils fall to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the MAC.

King's scored on its opening drive as junior Kyle Prescavage converted a 36-yard field goal to end a solid 11-play, 41-yard drive over the first 5:41 of play in the contest. The Monarchs defense then forced two straight three-and-outs from the Devils as they had possession and were driving to end the opening quarter of play.

The Devils had a chance to put their first points on the board after Anthony Casertera completed an 80-yard reception to Connor Perez on the first play of the drive. King's defense delivered again, getting a pass break-up from Teone Sherrod on second down and a pass break-up by Elijah Demosthene paired with a quarterback hurry from Dallas Solomon to force the Devils to attempt a field goal. The 37-yard attempt was unsuccessful with King's leading, 3-0, with 12:35 to play in the half.

It took just three plays from Tyler Moore to find Joe Herman for a 70-yard touchdown, and after a successful point-after attempt from Prescavage, King's led 10-0 with 11:12 left on the clock.

The Monarchs defense continued to hold off the Devils offense with another three-and-out and a four-play possession in their next two trips. King's put their final points of the half on the board as Moore went to the air to find Gabe Boccella from 10-yards out to cap off a three-play, 36-yard drive over 1:16 of play. Prescavage converted again to give the Monarchs the 17-0 lead. Neither team could string together a successful drive to end the half with King's on top, 17-0.

FDU had the ball to start the second half and put together a 16-play drive to begin the half, but the Monarchs defense delivered yet again and forced a turnover on downs with 8:07 to go in the third. It was a defensive battle to finish the quarter, with FDU in possession to start the fourth.

On the first play of the quarter Sherrod intercepted the Casertera pass and returned the ball 16-yards to set the Monarchs up for a Brennan Robinson 39-yard touchdown run on the following play to put King's up, 23-0, with 14:45 left on the game clock.

After empty trips from both teams, the Devils offense came alive to put their first points of the board. Caserta found Nick Santavicca for a 29-yard touchdown reception, still trailing 23-6, with 7:45 remaining.

An onside kick attempt from the Devils was unsuccessful, but FDU got their spark seven plays later as Isaiah Massey forced a fumble and returned the ball for a touchdown, pulling the Devils within 23-13 with 2:32 to play.

This time the FDU onside kick was successful as the Devils took over from the King's 45-yard line. An eight-play, 45 yard drive saw Casertera find Perez again from 21-yards out to inch within three, 23-20, but the Monarchs were able to complete a first down as Tekoah Guedes hit Gabe Boccella for a seven-yard reception. King's ran out the final seconds on the clock to earn the 23-20 win on their home turf.

Moore went 20-for-25 for 278 yards with two touchdowns in the win, while Robinson led King's on the ground with 106 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Herman led the Monarchs receivers with 117 yards on three receptions and a touchdown, while Boccella totaled eight catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Brendan Mozeleski and Joseph Carchio led the Monarchs defense with nine tackles each, with Mozeleski adding three tackles for loss. Myles Shelton came up big for the defense, recording two sacks for a loss of 27 yards, while Jasseim Lettsome totaled three quarterback hurries. Sherrod was crucial in the Monarchs secondary as he totaled five pass break ups.

Anthony Casertera went 18-for-44 for 279 yards and two touchdowns, while Connor Perez led the Devils offense with 130 receiving yards on six catches with a touchdown. The Devils defense was led by Joseph Randazzo with 15 tackles, while Matthew Dougherty and Tyrell Pereira with 14 tackles each.

As a team, the Monarchs recorded 23 first downs and 464 yards of total offense, while holding FDU to just 272 yards in the game.

King's will head out for a two-game road stretch as they head up the mountain to take on the Cougars of Misericordia University next Saturday, October 30 at 1:00 p.m. in Dallas, PA.
