PITTSTON, PA (November 20, 2021) – The King's College men's ice hockey team put together another valiant effort on Saturday night but the visiting Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College scored twice in the third period to defeat the Monarchs 6-4 at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
King's had four different goal scorers and eight different player tally a point. LVC took an early 2-0 lead in the game scoring twice in a span of 44 seconds in the first period. Darion Benchich got the Dutchmen on the board at 7:07 before Max Longa doubled the lead at 7:51. King's fought right back and cut the lead in half going into the first intermission as
Casey Gerstein tallied a power-play goal off an assist by
Mahingan Decontie at the 17:54 mark. The goal was Gerstein's second of the season while Decontie recorded his first assist.
King's came out firing in the second period and tied the game up just 2:36 into the period as Decontie scored just 22 seconds after a Monarch power-play opportunity expired for his second goal of the season.
Jackson Grozelle setup Decontie for the goal for his second assist of the season and of the weekend.
Nick Richards gave KC their first lead of the game at 6:55 when he fired a shot into the back of the net from near the blue line for his first goal of the season and second of his career.
Patrick Nowak and
Kent Lee recorded assists on the goal giving Nowak his first career point and Lee his sixth assist of the year. The lead didn't last long as LVC responded with a goal of their own at 7:17 with Matt Kassab scoring for the Dutchmen. The visitors retook the lead at 14:24 with Benchich scoring his second goal of the game. The Monarchs responded right back with a power-play goal at 16:34 from
Ian Zaleski to even the score up at 4. Zaleski tallied his first goal as a Monarch as third of his career.
Tyler Blanchard and Gerstein assisted on the play giving Blanchard his fifth assist of the year and Gerstein his second point of the game and first career assist.
Jered Stevenson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 51 seconds into the third period off a pass from Alex Borowiec. Borowiec then setup the final goal of the game as he intercepted a pass during a Monarch power-play and found Chris Mingus for his third goal of the year with 16 minutes remaining. The Monarchs fought hard to cut into the Dutchmen lead but were unable to score on Gabriel Pigeon in the final period.
Decontie and Gerstein finished with two points each on one goal and one assist. The Monarchs had a 32-21 shot advantage in the game led by
Jack Cooper with six shots. Cooper was great on faceoffs winning eight out of 12 while Decontie won a team-high 12 and lost five. King's had 14 additional shots blocked. Tyler Syager made 25 saves in goal recording six apiece in the first and third periods and 13 in the seconds.
King's will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series with SUNY Morrisville. The Monarchs will host the Mustangs on Friday afternoon at 4 pm before traveling up to Morrisville on Saturday for a 5 pm start.
