Men's Hoops Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime

SCRANTON, PA (December 4, 2021) -- Despite 52 second-half points, the King's College men's basketball team was outscored, 10-8, in the overtime period as they fell on the road at Marywood University, 91-89, on Saturday afternoon in the Insalaco Arena. The Monarchs fall to 4-4 overall while the Pacers improve to 5-4.

This matchup was a battle from the start until the Pacers built a 10-point lead, 17-7, off a Marywood three with 12:08 left in the opening half. The Monarchs closed within three, 21-18, off a three from first year Chris Patton with 9:03 to go, but the Pacers responded as they built another double-digit advantage, 34-24, at the 3:40 mark of the first half. King's scored the last five points of the half, all from sophomore Carmine Castiello, to close the deficit, 34-29, at the break.

A 5-2 run to start the half for the Monarchs pulled them within two, 36-34, but Marywood kept King's at bay until the 11:52 mark when senior Patrick Galvin delivered with a layup to close the deficit to three, 51-48. Again, the Pacers responded to rebuild their lead, but a three from junior Collin Cook with 7:53 left in regulation put the Monarchs within one, 59-58.

The Monarchs got their first lead since the opening minutes of the game with 20 seconds left in the second half on a steal and transition layup from Castiello. The Pacers hit a layup on their next possession before first year Eamonn Walsh drew a foul with four seconds left and with a chance to win the game. The rookie hit one of two, and a missed jumper from Patton as time expired sent the game into the overtime period.

The host Pacers scored the first five points of the extra period, and the Monarchs could not recover as they dropped the non-conference contest, 91-89, in overtime.

Castiello led all scorers off the bench with 21 points in just 22 minutes of action, going 9-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, adding two rebound and two steals. Patton added 18 points shooting a solid 6-of-13 with three threes and three boards. Walsh was the other Monarch in double figures with a season-best 15 points, five caroms, and four assists. Galvin totaled 10 rebounds to lead the Monarchs, while senior Noah Tanner added a team-best seven assists and two steals.

Brendan Franko led four in double figures for the Pacers with 19 points, Cole Johnson recorded a double-double with game-high 12 rebounds and 18 points, and Corey Perkins tallied 10 helpers in the win.

As a team, the Monarchs shot 44.2 percent (34-77) from the floor with eight threes. They also dished out 22 team assists on their 34 field goals, grabbed 41 team rebounds, and collected six steals on 20 Pacer turnovers. Inside the box score, King's held the advantage in points in the paint (48-44) and fast break points (17-7).

The Monarchs are off for their finals-week break and will return to play in McGrane Gymnasium on Sunday, December 12 as they host the Mules of Muhlenberg College in non-conference action with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
