DOYLESTOWN, PA (March 20, 2021) --
Matt Mellinger recorded his 100th career hit on Saturday afternoon as the King's College baseball team battled to a split at Delaware Valley University in two extra inning games. The Aggies won the opener 2-1 on a walk-off single in the eighth before the Monarchs won the second game 8-4 in 12 innings.
The first game was a pitcher's dual between
Jacob Lupas and Aggie starter Dakota George. Neither team was able to score until Bobby Bright doubled in Timmy Lallis in the third inning. The Monarchs struck right back in the fourth with a leadoff single by
Pat Noone and a walk by Mellinger. Brendan Mozelski loaded the bases with two outs on a walk before Mellinger scored on a wild pitch to even the score at one.
In the eighth Bright walked to begin the inning and then moved up to second on a single. After two strikeouts by
Brandon Moffitt who relieved Lupas at the beginning of the seventh, Will Mitchell singled up the middle scoring the winning run.
Mellinger and Noone each had a hit in the opener while Lupas was sharp on the mound. He struck out four and allowed four hits in six innings. Moffitt struck out three in 1.2 innings and allowed three hits.
King's got on the board first in game two as Mellinger recorded his milestone hit in the third inning to score
Matt Bound. Two batters later
Noah Adams hit a two-RBI single to right field scoring Mellinger and Noone. The Aggies came right back and evened the score with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Bound put the Monarchs back on top in the sixth with a single to center scoring
Will McIntosh. The Aggies put a run across in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score back up at four. Delaware Valley looked to record their second walk-off of the day in the 10th but a great relay throw from
Chase Yochem in left to Bound at short to
Paul Helman got the DVU runner out at home trying to tag up and score on a fly ball.
The Monarchs broke through with four runs in the 12th as Mellinger and
Cole Heitzman knocked in atwo runs each with back-to-back two-out hits. Mellinger first hit a bases-loaded double to the gap in left center scoring
Andrew Steidle and Bound. Heitzman then knocked in Mellinger and Noone on a single to center. In the bottom half the leadoff batter struck out, and then King's ended the game by erasing a single with a perfectly turned 6-4-3 double play.
Steidle, Mellinger, Heitzman, Adams, Brennen Scheider, and McIntosh all had two hits each in the nightcap with Mellinger knocking in three including the game-winning run.
Landon LaBar pitched a great seven innings in relief of
Shane Beyer. LaBar allowed just one run on three hits during his time on the mound. Schneider got the win pitching the final three innings.
King's will look to win the season series tomorrow when they take on the Aggies for another double dip at Lipo Field in Wilkes-Barre starting at 12:00 pm.
