Colonels Sweep Monarch Women To Start 2021 Campaign

WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 20, 2021) -- The King's College women's tennis team lifted the lid on its 2021 season Saturday afternoon, but visiting Wilkes University was able to sweep both singles and doubles play in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action from Kirby Park.

In doubles, senior Diana Rodriguez teamed with classmate Alexis Zalutko in a spirited No. 1 pairs matchup, falling 8-5 to Zoe Klein and Dasha Yakhnis. Sophomore Addie Atkins and first-year Braelan Drollos were topped 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, while first-year pairing Jackie Costello and Briana Moraca fell 8-0 heading into singles play.

Rodriguez played better in the second set, dropping a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles, while Atkins was nipped 6-3, 6-2 at the third position. King's was playing with a very young lineup Saturday, featuring four players that had never played in their lineup position including three first-year players.

The Monarchs (0-1) will look to get in the win column Saturday, March 27 in York, PA, traveling to take on the Spartans of York College in MAC crossover action at 1 p.m.
