EDWARDSVILLE, PA (April 10, 2021) -- The King's College baseball team was in action for the first time in three weeks on Saturday with a pair of tough defeats at the hands of host Wilkes University.
The Colonels (9-9) had a walk-off 6-5 victory in game one before taking the nightcap 11-4 on Bruggeworth Field. King's (4-8) was unable to recover from early deficits in both games.
Wilkes opened up a 5-0 lead after three innings of the opener scoring one run in the first, three in the second, and then one more in the third. The Monarchs responded with a big fifth inning to tie the game up.
Three consecutive singles by
Seth Laky,
Cole Heitzman, and
Matt Bound loaded the bases.
Matt Dobeck was hit by a pitch and
Andrew Steidle drew a walk to score two runs.
Matt Mellinger then cleared the bases with a game-tying double to left center. The Monarchs loaded the bases again in the sixth with two outs on three straight walks, but WU managed to get the third out with no runs scored.
Dobeck reached base in every plate appearance in his return to the lineup recording one hit and walking twice with one hit-by-pitch. He also scored a run and knocked in one as the leadoff hitter for the Monarchs.
In game two the Colonels scored twice in each of the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead. The Monarchs cut into the lead in the fourth as
Cole Keating knocked in Mellinger with a triple to center. He then scored on a ground out to short by
Pat Noone.
Wilkes responded with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to increase their lead to 11-2. KC loaded the bases in the eighth for Noone who knocked in a run with a single to left before
Chase Yochem was hit by a pitch to plate the final run of the game.
Dobeck added two more hits in the nightcap to finish 3-for-5 on the day. He scored a run and drew another walk to reach base in seven of his nine total plate appearances. Mellinger had two hits in the second game while Noone knocked in two runs on two hits.
The Monarchs and Colonels are scheduled to be back in action on Sunday afternoon with another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm at Lipo Field.
