WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 10, 2021) -- King's College junior
Lauren Lamarca was a double-winner for the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon, but the King's College women's tennis team was tripped up by visiting Misericordia University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play from Kirby Park.
King's (0-3) fell behind early in the match after
Diana Rodriguez and
Alexis Zalutko dropped their match at No. 1 doubles, but the Monarchs rebounded at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
At No. 2 doubles,
Addie Atkins and Lamarca dispatched of their foes 8-3 for their first doubles win together of the season after having success in 2019-20. Junior
Mikayla Reynolds and first-year
Jackie Costello also picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles, topping Kayla Rembish and May Lyn Ettinger 8-4. The win was Costello's first collegiate victory for King's.
Singles play though would favor the Cougars (2-1), as Misericordia deadlocked the match at two wins apiece after Brianna Pizzano earned the win at No. 1 singles. The momentum for MU would continue with three more wins to clinch the victory before Lamarca was able to take a victory at No. 4 singles. Lamarca breezed to a 6-2 win before seeing Rembish return the favor in a 6-0 win in set two. In the super tiebreaker, Lamarca earned the final two points after it was tied 9-9 to clinch her win. It was her first singles win of the year.
First-year Braelan Drollos played well at No. 6, earning six games but couldn't pick up a set in falling 6-3, 6-4. King's will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, taking on local foe Wilkes University in MAC Freedom play from Wilkes' courts at Ralston Athletic Complex.
