WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 17, 2021) -- The King's College women's lacrosse team honored its five senior student-athletes prior to Saturday's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game with Stevens Institute of Technology, as
Kylie McCarthy,
Orla Cottell,
Mary Kate Klodarska,
Helen Zaremba and
Emma Lehman were celebrated for their hard work over the last four season. Unfortunately though, visiting Stevens (6-4, 5-2 MAC Freedom) would score the opening 12 goals in rolling to the 19-4 win in action from McCarthy Stadium.
King's (3-6, 3-4 MAC Freedom) played strong defense over the first eight minutes of the game led by Zaremba and got two big saves from Cottell, but Stevens finally broke through after a missed chance offensively by King's as Zoe Cook fired in her 18th of the season for the 1-0 lead. The Ducks would score 11 more times over the next 15 minutes before junior
Emily Sims took a low pass from sophomore
Celia Medina and tallied with a bounce shot to get the Monarchs on the board with 6:18 remaining in the half.
Stevens tacked on a pair of scores before the halftime break to make it 14-1 going into the second half, as the Ducks won 11 of th 15 draws in the first stanza to control play. The second half was more balanced as King's held Stevens to five goals, scoring three times as well. Lehman potted her 11th of the season at 27:22 of the second half for the Moanrchs, and then doubled her goal total with 10:47 to play. Medina would also get on the score sheet with an unassisted goal with 8:44 to go, but that would be all the Monarchs could get offensively.
Medina posted two points on a goal and assist, adding two draw controls, while Lehman scored on two of her three shots. Sims contributed two ground balls and two draw controls in addition to her woman-down goal, and sophomore defender
Vivian Williams scooped up two ground balls. Klodarska led the team with three draw controls, forcing a turnover, and first-year
Sarah McCormick and sophomore
Mackenzie Rockovich each also had caused turnovers. Cottell made eight saves in the cage for the Monarchs, as she started her 43rd game of her career on Senior Day.
Rutgers transfer Camryn Rogers was all over the place for the Ducks, as she posted eight points on six goals and two assists, adding five draw controls. Kyra Bednarski also had three goals and four assists, causing three turnovers, while Natalie Fitzpatrick and Morgan Westerby tallied four points in the win. Stevens outshot the Monarchs 35-7, while holding a 17-7 edge in draw controls.
The Monarchs are done with the 2021 Regular Season after Saturday's contest, but will play Tuesday, April 27 in the MAC Freedom Tournament Quarterfinals. Right now King's looks like its headed into a game with DeSales University (3-5, 3-3 MAC Freedom) in the quarterfinals, but the Monarchs can host their first playoff game in program history if the Bulldogs fall to top-seed FDU-Florham Wednesday afternoon due to King's 12-11 win last weekend over DSU to hold the tiebreaker.
