Stevens Tops King's Men's Lacrosse Saturday

HOBOKEN, NJ (April 17, 2021) -- Host Stevens Institute of Technology, which is receiving votes in the latest US Lacrosse Magazine Top 20 poll, made its case for a spot in the rankings as the host Ducks knocked off the King's College men's lacrosse team 25-2 in play from DeBaun Athletic Complex Saturday.

The Monarchs (1-8, 1-5 MAC Freedom) couldn't get much going in the opening half as the Ducks (7-2, 7-0 MAC Freedom) outshot the Monarchs 43-2 in the first 30 minutes while building an 18-0 lead at the halftime break. Much of this was due to King's turning the ball over 12 times combined with Stevens going 19-for-20 at the faceoff dot in the first half.

After the break, King's would settle in and start to get its offensive unit going while also taking care of the ball in transition. In the second half, King's was a perfect 10-for-10 on clear attempts while taking 13 of its 15 shots in the final 30 minutes. The Monarchs jumped on the board 1:36 into the third quarter thanks to a goal from Giannella as he took the ball from behind the net, dodged a defender and scored from 10 yards out front for the score.

Five minutes later, junior Brendan Gambino would take advantage of a defender snapping his stick, getting a pass from Giannella and sneaking a shot past the keeper on a tight angle following a crease roll. That was all the Monarchs would get offensively though as Stevens rolled to the victory. Gambino each posted three shots in addition to their unassisted goals for King's, while senior Gabe Vansuch, first-year Ryan Barnes and senior Michael O'Brien each took two shots apiece.

Defender Nick Anderson finished with three ground balls and one caused turnover on the day, while Trevor Douenias chalked up four ground balls to tie with Andrew Trainer for the team lead. First-year Alex Tristan also had three ground balls for the Monarchs, and Matt Wall and Joe Plachcinski combined to make 15 stops in net for the Monarchs.

A total of 14 Ducks scored on the day, led by the three goals and three assists from Ryan Gebhardt. Jack Savarese finished with five points on three goals and two helpers, while Joseph Grippo and Trevor Carroll each had three scores as well. Conner Park went a perfect 13-for-13 in face-offs for the Ducks, while Larry Park also was 8-for-8 at the dot for the hosts.

King's will have the week off before hosting Lycoming College for Senior Day Saturday, April 24 at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale in McCarthy Stadium.
