AMBLER, PA (April 24, 2021) -- The Arcadia University baseball team jumped out to early leads in both games of a doubleheader to defeat King's College by scores of 16-1 and 7-2 on Saturday afternoon from Skip Wilson Field in Ambler.
The Knights (17-9) came into the weekend needing to win a few games against the Monarchs to ensure home field advantage in the quarterfinal round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament which starts next weekend.
King's put runners on first and third in the top of the first with one out before the Knights got a double play to end the inning. The hosts came out swinging in the bottom half scoring nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. The Monarchs fought back in the second as
Brendan Mozeleski singled,
Andrew Steidle doubled, and then
Paul Helman walked to load the bases with two outs.
Matt Dobeck knocked in a run for the Monarchs with an infield single to short.
The Knights had another big inning in the fifth scoring six runs on three hits to increase their lead to 15-1. An insurance run in the sixth set the final score. The Monarchs had eight hits in the game led by Dobeck and
Matt Mellinger with two each.
In the second game Arcadia scored twice in the second and twice more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Monarchs got a runner on every inning against Knights ace Luke Fournier but were unable were unable to score any runs until the hosts made a call to the pen in the sixth.
Mellinger led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by
Cole Heitzman. Mozeleski moved the runners up one base with a sac bunt to the right side. Steidle single to right scoring Mellinger to cut the AU lead to 4-1. The Knights got the run back in the bottom of the inning on two doubles. They then added another two runs in the seventh to make it 7-1. In the top of the ninth
Brennen Schneider worked a pinch hit walk with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a Dobeck single, and then scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.
The Monarchs had seven hits, two walks, and two hit by pitches in the nightcap putting one runner on base in every inning. Dobeck and Heitzman recorded two hits each in the game. Dobeck finished the day with four hits out of the leadoff spot.
King's and Arcadia will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at Lipo Field with two games beginning at 12:00 pm. Prior to the games King's will honor their senior class.
