WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 24, 2021) -- The King's College women's tennis team led 2-1 after doubles action but couldn't hold on as Lycoming College came back to defeat the Monarchs 5-4 in play from Kirby Park Saturday afternoon.
King's (0-7, 0-5 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom) fell behind early as
Diana Rodriguez and
Alexis Zalutko fell to Mia Shuler and Hannah Seebold 8-1 at No. 1 singles. The Monarchs responded with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles, as
Addie Atkins and
Lauren Lamarca bested Madi Heller and Emily Wolfgang.
The Monarchs also earned a default win at No. 3 doubles as Lycoming only had five players, meaning King's would need to win three of the six singles matches to earn the team victory. First-year
Braelan Drollas would be credited with a win by default at No. 6 to put King's up 3-1 while Lamarca cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles to put KC up 4-1.
Unfortunately for the home team though Lycoming would power back with four consecutive straight set victories to earn the team victory. Lamarca moved to 3-2 in singles play this year, winning her second straight match Saturday while picking up her team-leading second win in doubles as well with Atkins.
The Monarchs will host Stevens Institute of Technology Wednesday April 28 at 3:30 p.m. from Kirby Park in more MAC Freedom play.
