Second-Seeded Arcadia Tops King's Men's Lax In MAC Freedom Quarters

GLENSIDE, PA (May 1, 2021) -- Second-seed Arcadia University scored 15 goals over the middle 30 minutes of the game, pulling away for a 20-6 win over the seventh-seeded Monarchs of King's College in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Quarterfinals in action from Jean Lenox West Field Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Arcadia (8-6) will move on to play the winner of the Wilkes University-Misericordia University contest, set for 7 p.m. Saturday evening in Dallas, PA. King's season comes to an end with a record of 1-10 on the campaign.

King's took an early lead just 1:17 into the contest, as senior Gabe Vansuch tallied an unassisted goal to put the visitors up 1-0. King's was all over Arcadia in the early going, taking advantage of a slashing penalty to rack up three more shots including a hit post by junior Paul Trabucco on the extra-man opportunity. The contest stayed tied until the 5:16 point of the first quarter when Clo Muscara posted his 30th of the season on an assist by Brady Manion.

The score would stay deadlocked at one heading into the second quarter thanks to two saves by sophomore goalkeeper Matt Wall. In the second, Wall would deny the Knights two more times early in the stanza before Brian Albertson was set up by Manion to make it 2-1 Arcadia. Less than two minutes later, Brian Rusnak benefited from Manion's third assist of the game to make it 3-1.

King's battled back to make it 3-2 on a goal by junior Ryan Candelori and nearly tied the game seconds later on a near-miss by first-year Joe Giannella, but Jack Rogers pushed the Arcadia lead back up to two at 4-2 with 7:27 left in the first half. That goal by Rogers started a 5-1 spurt for the hosts, highlighted by a pair of scores from Justin Chinici to make it 8-3 at the half.

Arcadia would explode out of the locker room in the second half, netting the first eight goals of the third quarter before Vansuch scored his third goal of the game to make it 16-4. Vansuch would score two more times in the fourth quarter, eclipsing his personal-best for goals in a game with five in his final contest as a Monarch but it wasn't enough for the late rally.

Another Monarch finishing his career on Saturday was midfielder Trevor Douenias, who picked up 10 ground balls and finished with 108 loose balls on the season to break the single-season record for ground balls in just 11 games. He also won 12 face-offs on Saturday, upping his season total to 166, another program record eclipsing the 162 from Nick Foley in 2018. His 355 face-off victories for his career moves him into third all-time, behind just Foley (604) and Billy McCullough (431).

First-year defender Joe Wiedow finished a strong first season with the Monarchs, picking up three ground balls while causing three turnovers on the day. Fellow newcomer Nick Anderson set a new personal-best for caused turnovers in a contest with four Saturday, as King's forced 15 turnovers on the afternoon. Giannella didn't score but fired five shots, while senior Charlie Alessi took three shots with two going on goal. Wall finished with seven stops in net in 34:32, as Jackson Campbell also made four saves for King's

The Monarchs were outshot 45-28 for the game and AU held a 39-25 edge in ground balls. Manion paced Arcadia with eight points on three goals and five assists, and Muscara added four goals.
