Burke and Mellinger Named To All-MAC Freedom Baseball Team

WILKES-BARRE, PA (May 14, 2021) – Seniors Chris Burke and Matt Mellinger were named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Baseball Team for the 2021 season as voted on by the eight conference coaches and announced by the conference office on Friday. Burke was a second team selection as a utility player while Mellinger was an honorable mention as a first baseman.

Burke earns his first all-conference honor after playing MAC Freedom games for the first time in his three years at King's. The Frackville, PA native played in just 18 games this year but still led the Monarchs with 19 runs batted in (RBI), three home runs, and seven doubles. He batted .338 collecting 24 hits and scored 14 runs. Burke slugged .592 on the season while drawing 10 walks as one of the most dangerous batters in the Monarch lineup all season. He showed his speed on the base paths as well recording one triple and two stolen bases on two attempts.

He recorded seven multi-hit games including four games with three hits and led the team with six multi-RBI games. Burke came up big for the Monarchs with three hits and three runs scored in a tough 12-8 loss to Stevens on April 14 and recorded a career-high four RBI against the Ducks on a home run and a double in 7-5 loss back on March 7 in Hoboken, NJ. In the MAC Freedom Quarterfinals at DeSales, he went three-for-five including a home run with three RBI and two runs scored in game one and then added another hit in game two to lead the Monarchs offensively against the Bulldogs.

Mellinger earns his first all-conference honor after a great career for the Monarchs. In his final season he recorded a .268 batting average over 26 games played. He was among the team leaders with 26 hits including six doubles, 18 RBI, 12 runs scored, and 11 walks taken. In the field he was fantastic recording a .988 fielding percentage with 145 putouts and 13 assists with just two errors on a team-leading 160 chances. He ranked in the top 10 of the MAC Freedom in total chances and putouts while he is 12th in fielding percentage.

The Allentown, PA native recorded his 100th career hit at Delaware Valley early in the year and had nine multi-hit games to finish with 123 career hits and a .303 career average. He had the team's second-longest hitting streak of the year at nine games while also recording five multi-RBI games. He broke the program record with 772 career putouts and finished his career with an amazing .992 fielding percentage. During his career he started 107 games and appeared in 109 of a possible 111 games over his four years.

Arcadia senior Trevor Mattson was named the Player of the Year while junior teammate Luke Fournier was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year. Thomas Carpenter from DeSales was selected as Rookie of the Year and DSU's Tim Neiman earned Coach of the Year honors.
