Men's Tennis Season Comes To End With 5-0 Loss To FDU-Florham

MADISON, NJ (May 3, 2021) -- The King's College men's tennis team had to overcome a myriad of events Monday afternoon in their 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Quarterfinal match at FDU-Florham, but the rain and bus issues were too much as the Devils topped KC 5-0 in play from Ferguson Recreation Center and ultimately Drew University.

The Monarchs (4-6) started doubles play around 2:30 p.m. after a delay due to travel issues, and right after play began rain put a stop to the festivities for over an hour. After play resumed, rain came once again even harder which forced the match to be moved indoors to the Drew University indoor courts about 10 minutes away.

Once play finally got going, FDU-Florham (6-4) earned three hard-fought victories to sweep the doubles action. At No. 1 doubles, senior Austin Mackey teamed with Logan Gregory but couldn't top Jonathan Carasso and Zach Puccia an 8-3 FDU win.

The No. 2 doubles match was a back-and-forth battle as first-year Joe Lennon and junior Nick Harth were outlasted 8-4 by Jacob Mosteller and Neal D'Adamo. Senior Jason Homschek and junior Sam Cadman also fell 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to force the Monarchs to win five of the six singles' matches.

In singles, four of the five matches went to three sets in what was a fantastic tennis match. At No. 3, Harth and D'Adamo played a thriller as Harth took the opening set 7-6 before D'Adamo came back to match Harth with a second-set 7-6 win. The third set was on serve when the match came to an end.

That was due to Carasso picking up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles while Puccia earned a 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the match. While that happened though, other nailbiters were going on, as Homschek won his first set at No. 4 singles before falling 6-1 in the second. In the third, the match was going to a third-set tiebreak at 6-6 when Puccia clinched to stop play.

Lennon and JT Murray also were playing a great match at No. 5 singles, as Lennon captured the first set before Murray tallied a win in the second set 6-0. In the third set, Lennon was leaning 3-0 when the match came to an end. Play at No. 6 singles never got underway due to there being only five indoor courts at Drew.

FDU-Florham will move on to play Stevens Institute of Technology Wednesday in the MAC Freedom semifinals.
