WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 11, 2021) --- The King's College men's soccer team fought hard on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium, but a pair of second half goals was the difference in a 2-0 loss to Juniata College.
The Monarchs came out of the gates strong and had the first opportunity of the match in the ninth minute of play, as
Alex Showalter took a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by the Eagles and gave King's their first corner kick of the game. After a short ball in,
Shane Serio received a cross at the near post that he struck hard off of a Juniata defender and out for another corner kick.
The Monarchs dominated the possession in the first half and led the Eagles in shots 7-2.
Justin Decoteau had a good look at a goal late in the first half, but his header was saved by Axel Grater.
Juniata's Blake Cassel scored what would end up being the game-winner less than two minutes into the second half as he received a cross from the right wing and one-timed it into the back of the net.
Pat Hughes made a great save on a shot from Saumel Patston midway through the second half. King's continued to battle on the defensive end but were unable to keep Malvin Madzimbamuto from scoring on a breakaway in the 79th minute.
The Monarch's outshot the Eagles 15-8 in the contest and also held a 12-3 advantage in cornerkicks. Axel Grater made five saves for Juniata while
Pat Hughes had four for King's.
The Monarchs will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Keystone College in another non-conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm at McCarthy Stadium.
