Monarchs Settle for 1-1 Draw at Marywood

SCRANTON, PA (September 22, 2021) --- The King's College men's soccer team played Marywood University to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening at Pacer Field in Scranton, PA.

The Monarchs (2-2-0) and Marywood (0-4-0) settled for a split after 110 minutes of play in a defensive battle. KC started off the match with some aggressive play as Justin Decoteau fired off the opening shot in the first minute of play, but Alex Russo made the save in net for the Pacers. Marywood responded quickly with a counterattack just 20 seconds later and earned the first cornerkick of the game. This led to the first shot of the night for MU that sailed high over the crossbar.

King's earned back to back corner kicks in the 15th minute that each led to opportunities on frame, but unfortunately the Monarchs were unable to capitalize. Both sides continued to fight for the opening goal and the contest became physical late in the first half with a total of eight fouls being called in the opening 45 minutes. Neither team managed to break the deadlock before the end of the first half.

KC took to the attack to start the second half and earned three consecutive corner kicks that led to two shots from Liam McLoughlin, both missing wide left. Monarch goalkeeper Pat Hughes stood strong in the 58th minute making a key save on a well struck Pacer shot. Eight minutes later MU earned a free kick after a foul at the top of the 18 yard box near the Monarch goal. Chris Valdes took the kick for the Pacers and went straight at the King's wall leading to an unfortunate deflection that sent the ball into the back of the net giving Marywood a 1-0 lead.

The Monarchs began to search for an equalizer and after making a few substitutions McLoughlin was able to level the match with a ripped shot past Russo from just inside the box at the 73 minute mark. Aziz Atiyeh picked up the assist on the goal with a well placed throw-in. The goal marked McLoughlin's second of the season. King's continued to build momentum late into the second half as they looked to score the go ahead goal, but they were unable to do so as the teams stayed even after 90 minutes.

KC created their first opportunity in overtime less than two minutes in when Buck Diacont missed a shot just wide of the goal. Several players grew tired legs on both sides of the pitch as the match progressed into a second overtime.

King's opened the second overtime with a pair of shots, the first of which was saved by Russo off the boot of Kyle Shalvey and the second missed wide by Evan Egnatovich. Marywood saw the last opportunity of the match on a freekick near the Monarch goal but the shot was sent well high and the match ended in a tie.

KC out-shot the Pacers 17-12 and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. McLoughlin led all players with four shots, while Hughes added four saves in goal.

The squad will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they return home to take on Cabrini University at 3 p.m.
