WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 25, 2021) --- A pair of second half goals pushed Cabrini past the King's College men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Monarchs (2-3-1) fought hard to keep themselves in the match, but the Cavaliers of Cabrini University (5-3-1) were able to find the back of the net twice in the second half to edge out the Monarchs. Cabrini didn't waste any time getting their afternoon started as Tyler Jankowski scored the games' opening goal in the 7th minute off and assist from Nick LoBiondo. The Monarchs searched to find a quick answer and nearly found it when
Liam Yair ripped a shot just high in the 9th minute.
KC continued to build momentum late into the second half by earning back to back corner kicks in the 35 minute mark leading to shots from
Nate Horn and
Justin Decoteau, but unfortunately the Monarchs were unable to score. Just eight minutes later Yair recieved a pass from
Kyle Shalvey after a short corner kick between Shalvey and
Mason Vanhorn. Yair launched the ball into the top right corner of the goal leaving Cavalier goalkeeper Griff Rogers no chance to make a save. The goal marked Yair's second goal of the season. The match would stay level at 1-1 going into halftime.
King's saw the first offensive action of the second half after earning a corner kick in the 48th minute.
Shane Serio was able to get a shot off but just missed the frame wide right. Cabrini initiated a counter attack of their own in the 56th minute when Nick Booth hit a shot from just inside the 18 yard box, but Monarch goalkeeper
Cole Catherman stood strong and made the save. Two minutes later Cabrini's Tyler Jankowski scored his second goal of the match to give CU a 2-1 lead over King's. Shortly after, Cabrini made the score 3-1 when Trent Valle added to the tally for the Cavaliers.
Yair and Shalvey led the Monarchs with three shots each. Catherman earned his first career start in goal and added three saves for KC.
King's will look to rebound from the tough loss on Wednesday night at 7 pm when they travel to Williamsport, PA to take on Penn College.
