Men's Soccer Fights Hard but Falls to Wilkes 1-0

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 11, 2022) --- The King's College men's soccer team dropped yet another close contest, this time falling to the visiting Colonels of Wilkes University 1-0, on Tuesday night from McCarthy Stadium. With the loss, the Monarchs fell to 4-8-2 overall, and 0-3 in the MAC Freedom, while the Colonels improved to 5-7-1 overall, and 2-2 in conference.

King's (4-8-2, 0-3 Freedom) got out to a quick start, firing off the first three shots of the game. The first shot came from junior Christopher Vollrath who forced a save from the Wilkes (5-7-1, 2-2 Freedom) goalkeeper in the sixth minute. After the squads traded a shot each, the Colonels fired off four straight shots, forcing two saves from junior goalkeeper Jake Forst. The Monarchs got two of the final three shots of the frame, but neither side broke through, as the half ended scoreless.

Coming out of the half, the Colonels looked to jump on the front foot, tallying the first five shots of the frame, before junior Buck Diacont's 81st minute effort was blocked. Just three minutes later, Wilkes broke the deadlock as Matthew Horwedel beat Forst, to put the Colonels up 1-0 in the 84th minute. King's looked for an equalizer, but for the third straight game, ran out of time, falling 1-0.

Wilkes outshot the Monarchs 15-8, including an 8-3 edge on shots on target, while the Monarchs held the advantage on corner kicks 4-2.

Vollrath led the Monarchs attack, tallying two shots, including one on target. Junior Liam Yair and sophomore Evan Egnatovich both added single shots on target. Forst made the start in net, turning aside seven of eight shots, picking up the loss.
