Women's Soccer Senior Day Spoiled by FDU's Late Equalizer

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 21, 2022) --- The King's College women's soccer led late into the second half, before the FDU-Florham Devils equalized, as the teams played to a 1-1 draw on Friday night. Prior to the match, the Monarchs honored eight players for their dedication to the team, including seniors Angelina Falcone, Grace Conover, Kristina Keithley, Shay Cobb, Ali Devers, juniors Madelyn Reuter, Loryn Walker, and team manager Melissa Klecker

With the tie King's moves to 7-4-4 overall and 1-3-2 in MAC play, while FDU 13-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.

It was a back-and-forth affair early, as FDU (13-4-1, 2-3-1) was able to tally the first shot of the contest at 7:13 forcing graduate goalkeeper Tara Bender into her first save. King's (7-4-4, 1-3-2) responded with the next two shots, as sophomores Mikaela Majcher and Angelina Vargas recorded efforts. The Monarchs would strike first in the 31st minute, as Vargas used some nifty footwork to get through a couple Devil defenders, before playing a lovely pass across goal, while sophomore Raina Adelman converted, putting King's up 1-0 at 30:01. The teams traded shots for the remainder of the half, as King's led at the break 1-0.

Coming out of the half, FDU notched the first two shots, before King's thought they had gone ahead by two goals, as sophomore Liz Porto's shot hit the underside of the bar and looked as if it bounced over the goal line, but the referee ruled it did not, as the King's lead remained at 1-0 in the 59th minute. The Devils upped the pressure looking for an equalizer, and they were given a golden opportunity in the 87th with a free kick on the edge of the Monarch box. Mia Lopez stepped up for the free kick and beat Bender to the near post, tying the score at one at 86:45. Neither side found a winner over the final three minutes, as the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.

FDU outshot King's 16-7 overall, including a 9-3 mark on shots on target, while also holding a 7-2 edge on corner kicks.

The Monarchs' attack was led by Adelman, who recorded two points on her goal, while Vargas added one point with her assist. Falcone and Porto added two shots, while Adelman, Vargas, Majcher are all recorded one. Bender made the start in net turning away eight of nine shots, picking up the tie.

Lopez paced the Devils' attack collecting two points on one goal, adding four shots, including three on target. Ashlye Dietrich added four shots, while Madison Kleinwaks tallied three shots, and Francesca Escudero notched two. Erica Blackburn got the start in net making two saves on three shots, collecting the tie.

King's returns to action on Thursday as the Monarchs travel to Dallas, PA to take on number two nationally ranked Misericordia at 7 p.m.
