Early Stevens Run Dooms Field Hockey in Season Finale

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 26, 2022) -- In their 2022 season finale, the King's College field hockey team saw the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology post three early goals in the opening period as they fell, 4-1, to the Ducks in the MAC Freedom match up. With the loss, the Monarchs finish their 2022 campaign 6-11 overall and 3-5 in the MAC Freedom, while the Ducks improve to 11-7 with a 6-2 conference mark.

It was a fast-paced opening quarter as the Ducks fired off four shots in the first 2:48 of action before Sarah Korczukowski found the goal to put Stevens (11-7, 6-2 MAC Freedom) ahead in the early minutes of the conference bout. Just 2:02 later, the Ducks tacked on another goal, this time by Makenna Quigley, before Dani Hessels tallied the third goal in the eighth minute as Stevens held a 3-0 advantage early.

King's (6-11, 3-5 MAC Freedom) found their opportunity just 38 seconds later as Ali Tedik received a pass from Sara Whitesell and maneuvered around the feet of the Ducks defenders to send the ball to the back of the cage and pull King's within two, 3-1, after a thrilling opening period.

The game play was much more balanced in the second as both the shot totals (3-3) and penalty corner opportunities (2-2) were even as the teams headed into the halftime break with the Ducks ahead, 3-1.

The Monarchs posted a valiant effort in the second half to try and post the equalizers as King's went on a tear across a minute-long stretch, tallying seven shots and four penalty corners, but the Stevens defense maintained their 3-1 lead heading into the final stanza.

The offensive onslaught slowed in the fourth as neither team could capitalize on their corner opportunities until Emily Hyde recorded her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke in the 50th minute to post the final goal of the night and secure the 4-1 win for Stevens in the MAC Freedom contest in McCarthy Stadium.

Tedik led King's with two points on her goal while adding a team-high five shots with four on target. Whitesell added a point with her assist, while Abby Wolfe posted two shots. Both Wolfe and Abby Achenbach made huge defensive saves to keep the Ducks within reach as well. Ellie Glatz was strong in the cage in the contest as she posted 12 saves.

The Ducks saw four different goal scorers in the win, while both Julia Zatyko and Emily Smart tallied four shots, all on target. Goalkeeper Emily Franco totaled seven saves in the win.

As a team, the Monarchs were slightly edged in penalty corners (12-11) while totaling 13 shots as a team with eight on target.
