WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 30, 2022) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the season as sophomore
Aaron Frenkel scored in overtime to give the Monarchs a 3-2 overtime win against 11
th-ranked Wilkes University Sunday afternoon from Toyota SportsPlex. With the win, King's improves to 1-1-0, and 1-0-0 in UCHC play, while the Colonels fall to 0-1-1, and 0-1-0 in conference play. With the win, King's picked up their first ever win over the Colonels.
King's (1-1-0, 1-0-0) came out quickly firing off the first four shots of the game, as sophomore
Tyler Blanchard got the first shot of the game away just 22 seconds in. Wilkes (0-1-1, 0-1-0) responded with five of the next six shots, including two on a power play, but senior goaltender
Ismael Ralsten was up to the task, as the teams headed into the first intermission scoreless.Â
The Colonels came out quickly firing off the first four shots, before each team was called for a penalty. With the teams playing at four-on-four, Wilkes was called for another penalty setting up the Monarchs with a four-on-three power play. It did not take long for King's to capitalize on the man-advantage as Blanchard threw a puck across the crease to sophomore
Jack Cooper, who tapped it into the yawning cage, and putting the Monarchs up 1-0 at 3:11.
Wilkes upped the pressure looking for an equalizer, and it came just over eight minutes later as Joe Johnson beat Ralsten to tie the game at 1-1 at 11:31. With just over two minutes to play in the second, first-year Wyatt Allen lofted a puck from his own defensive end, just across the Wilkes' blue line, where Cooper took the loss puck and made a move, beating Garrett Nieto, to put King's back on top 2-1 heading into the third period.Â

The third period began much like the first as the Monarchs tallied the first three shots of the frame, but the Colonels responded with the next five. On the fifth of those shots, Wilkes tied the game back up at, this time at two, collecting the rebound off the save from Ralsten, scoring at 3:40. The squads traded chances and power plays for the remainder of the period, but neither team broke through, as the game headed to overtime tied at two.
In overtime, the Monarchs defense activated joining the rush on multiple occasions as sophomore
Erik Borschevsky and Allan combined for the first three shots of the frame. Following two shots for the Colonels, Frenkel took matters into his own hands. His first shot was stopped, but he followed up by burying the rebound to give King's the 3-2 overtime win, scoring at 3:28.Â

Ralsten was outstanding in net, making 35 saves on 37 shots, picking up his first career win in net. Cooper paced the offense with two points on two goals, converting on two of three shots, while Allan added two points, picking up assists on Cooper's second goal and Frenkel's game winner. Frenkel led the Monarchs with four shots, while Allan and Blanchard both added three. The Monarchs were strong in the face-off circle, winning 35 of 67 face-offs. Blanchard won 15 of 24, as sophomore
Alexander Ray won nine of 14, while sophomore
Patrick Nowak won seven of 13. King's was strong on special teams, going 1-5 on the power play, while going 7-7 on the penalty kill.Â

Ben Stefanini led Wilkes with five shots, while three other Colonels tallied four. Wilkes won 32 of 67 total face-offs in the contest, while Nieto picked up the loss in net, making 21 saves on 24 Monarch shots. The Colonels went 0-7 on the power play, while going 4-5 on King's man-advantages.
King's will return to Revolution Ice Centre for the home opener on Friday, as the Monarchs take on Chatham University at 7 p.m. Â
