Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Delaware Valley 2-1

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 5, 2022) --- The King's College men's soccer team battled against the Aggies of Delaware Valley University in a MAC Freedom contest on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium, falling to the Aggies 2-1. With the loss King's falls to 4-6-2 overall and 0-2 in conference, while Delaware Valley improves to 6-3 and 1-1 in conference.

It was a physical affair between King's (4-6-2, 0-2) and Delaware Valley University (6-3, 1-1) as both sides came out aggressive. The Aggies recorded the first shot of the game, as Delaware Valley decided to shoot directly from kickoff. King's responded however, tallying the next two shots of the contest. From that point on the squads would trade efforts, with King's getting the better looks, but neither side being able to breakthrough, as the sides headed into the break scoreless.

The second half began much like the first, as the Aggies got away the first shot of the period, before the Monarchs ripped off the next four shots. It didn't take long after that though for King's to open the scoring as sophomore Dylan Domchek's shot found the side netting, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. The Aggies responded however, as corner kick was whipped in as contact was made with junior goalkeeper Jake Forst, but no foul was called as Delaware Valley knotted the score up in the 67th minute. Following the Aggie equalizer, it was all King's, who recorded six of the next eight shots, before Forst was called for a foul, that not many people could believe, giving Delaware Valley a penalty kick with just 25 seconds left, which was scored, giving the Aggies the 2-1 win.

The match was marred by constant whistles as both teams were called for fouls throughout, with the Monarchs being called for 13 fouls and receiving sevens yellow cards, while the Aggies were called for eight fouls, two yellow cards, and a red card.

King's led Delaware Valley, outshooting the Aggies 19-14 overall, including 10-6 on shots on target, while also holding an advantage on corner kicks, 7-3.

Domchek led the Monarchs bytallying two points on his goal, while also recording three shots, including two on target. Senior Bryan Stefans and first-year Philip Permyashkin both added one point, picking up the assists on Domchek's opener. Senior Aziz Atiyeh, juniors Mike Davies and Liam Yair, and sophomores Shane Serio and Austin Miller all added two shots on the evening. Forst got the start in net, making four saves on six shots, picking up the loss.

The Aggies were led by Thomas Fitzsimmons and Dan Arone who both tallied two points, scoring a goal, and recording three shots each. Aaron Osborne provided offensive depth adding two shots. Andrew Roberto got the start in net, making nine saves on ten shots, collecting the win.

The Monarchs return to action on Saturday evening as they host the Seagulls of Salisbury University in the final non-conference game of the year, with kickoff set for 6 pm at McCarthy Stadium.
