WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 8, 2022) --- The King's College men's soccer team faced an eerily similar ending on Saturday night, as they did on Wednesday night, this time falling to the visiting Sea Gulls of Salisbury University 2-1 from McCarthy Stadium. With the loss, the Monarchs fall to 4-7-2 on the season, while the Sea Gulls improve to 2-7-2.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, as both King's (4-7-2) and Salisbury (2-7-2) were feeling each other out. The Monarchs recorded the first shot of the contest in the third minute as sophomore
Nate Horn's effort went high. The Sea Gulls collected the next two shots, with those efforts coming in the 24
th and 27
th minutes. King's then tallied the final two shots of the frame in 35
th and 37
th minutes, as the teams headed into the break scoreless.
Coming out of the half, the Monarchs once again fired off the first shot, this time senior
Justin Decoteau's effort was turned aside in the 4
7th minute. The teams again settled in defensively before the Sea Gulls broke through on a headed by Ethan Dolezal in the 70
th minute, putting Salisbury on top 1-0. However, it did not take long for the Monarchs to respond as first-year
Philip Permyashkin's effort beat the Sea Gull keeper, knotting the score at one in 74
th minute. King's thought they had the winning goal in the 86
th minute, in which senior
Aziz Atiyeh's header was cleared off the goal line. Instead, Salisbury got the winner in the 89
th minute as Dolezal's effort appeared to be cleared off the line, with the linesman ruling the ball did not cross the line, but the center referee giving the goal, and giving the Sea Gulls the 2-1 win.
King's held the advantage on shots, 13-9, while the teams finished with three shots on target each. Salisbury held a slim advantage on corner kicks, 6-5.
Permyashkin paced the Monarch attack, tallying two points on his goal, adding two shots. Meanwhile, sophomore
Shane Serio notched three shots, while Horn and Decoteau both added two shots. Junior
Jake Forst got the start in goal, making one save on three shots, picking up the loss.
Dolezal led the Sea Gulls picking up four points on two goals, while adding five shots. Bret Dickens and Joseph Ennas both collected one point, picking up assists on Dolezal's first goal. Zach Walega got the start in net, making two saves on three shots, notching the win.
King's will look to get back in the win column as the Monarchs host Wilkes University on Tuesday night at McCarthy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
