SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, PA (November 10, 2022) -- With the game clock winding down and the score knotted at 55 each, junior
Caileigh Costello connected for a long-range jump shot and iced the win with a free throw in the final seconds of regulation to lead the King,s College women's basketball team to a thrilling 58-55 win over Penn State Schuylkill on Thursday evening on the road. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 1-1, while the Nittany Lions fall to 0-2.
After a slow start to begin the opening quarter of play, King's (1-1) went on a 14-2 run in the final 2:35 of the quarter to trail by just five, 19-14. The teams traded baskets throughout the evenly contested second period as the Monarchs trailed, 34-30, heading into the break.
The Monarchs opened the second half with plenty of energy, going on an 8-4 run to tie the game on a free throw from sophomore
Lauren Casey with 6:44 to go in the third. The Nittany Lions (0-2) regained the lead, but the Monarch's would remain within five as they entered the final stanza trailing by just one, 47-46.
King's controlled much of the fourth quarter as they outscored Penn State Schuylkill, 12-8. Down three with just under three minutes left in regulation, Casey delivered again as she connected for layups on back-to-back possessions off assists from junior
Kiersten Krouse and senior
Cailin Wilson to put King's ahead, 55-54, with 2:15 remaining.
The Nittany Lions hit one-of-two from the charity stripe to tie the game, but out of a Monarchs timeout it was Wilson who found
Caileigh Costello for a deep jumper to give King's the 57-55 lead with three seconds to play. The Monarchs defense put a stop to Penn State Schuylkill's last efforts before Costello sealed the win with a free throw as the King's women's basketball team earned the 58-55 win over Penn State Schuylkill.
Wilson led King's with 13 points, adding three assists and three rebounds, while first year
Kathy Shepherd came off the bench to add 11 points. First year
Mackenzie Bennett also had a solid game off the pines, leading the Monarchs with five boards, while fellow first year
Deanna Wallace collected a team-best two steals.
The Nittany Lions were led by Tajae Stevenson with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Monarchs shot 41.9 percent (18-43) from the floor and 35.3 percent (6-17) from beyond the arc while holding the hosts to 0 threes on six attempts. King's held the edge in the win in points off the bench, out scoring the Nittany Lions 29-5.
King's will be back in action on Saturday evening as they host Susquehanna University in non-conference play in McGrane Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m.
