Women's Hockey Downs Wilkes in the Shootout


WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 30, 2022) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team earned their first points of the season, collecting the extra point, as they took down visiting rival Wilkes University in the shootout, 3-2 Wednesday night from Revolution Ice Center. With the shootout win kings improves to 0-8-1 overall, 0-6-1 in UCHC play, and 0-0-1 in MAC play, while Wilkes moves to 2-5-1 overall, 2-2- in UCHC play, and 0-0-1 in MAC play. 
 
Wilkes (2-5-1, 2-2-1, 0-0-1) came out quickly firing off the first three shots of the game, but King's (0-8-1, 0-6-1, 0-0-1) replied, picking up the next two shots of the contest, before earning the game's first power-play. On the ensuing power play sophomore Jordan Dittmar opened the scoring at 9:11, as first-year Amanda Sokol and graduate student Issy LeBrun picked up the assists. Thanks to Dittmar's tally, King's took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. 
 
Wilkes once again got the first shot of the period, but King's got back on the power play and this time Sokol found the back of the net, putting King's on top 2-0, at 2:10 on an unassisted goal. Trailing 2-0, Wilkes replied with the next four shots before cutting into the King's lead on an unassisted goal from Bella Kaczorowski, making it a 2-1 game at 6:33. King' opens weathered the storm for the remainder of the period taking a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. 
 
Wilkes came out for the period, looking to knot the score up, but the Monarchs defense held the Colonels at bay. King's looked to extend the lead, but were unable to find a third goal, leaving the door open for Wilkes. With just over three minutes to play, Wilkes took their opportunity to tie up the score as Kaczorowski picked up her second goal of the game at 3:16 to knot the score at 2, as the teams headed to overtime. 
 
In overtime, both teams had chances for the game-winner, but both goaltenders came up huge as the game headed to a shootout. In the shootout, sophomore goaltender Syd Dahl made three saves and first year Svetlana Yarosh found the back of the net as King's earned the extra point taking down Wilkes 3-2. 
 
Dahl was fantastic in net making 45 saves on 47 shots picking up the shootout win. Offensively King's was led by Sokol who tallied 2 points on a goal and an assist, as Dittmar and LeBrun both picked up a point, on a goal and an assist, respectively. The Monarchs won 32 of 65 face-offs, led by Dittmar who won 13 of 21, and first-year Madison Vaughan who won six of 10. It was a strong special team showing for the Monarchs, who went 2-5 on the power-play and 4-4 on the penalty kill. 
 
In goal for the Colonels, Addy Olson made 27 saves on 29 shots. Offensively, Wilkes was led by Kaczorowski, who tallied two goals. Wilkes won 33 of 65 face-offs and went 0-4 on the power-play and 3-5 on the penalty kill. 
 
King's heads back on the road to take on Lebanon Valley College at 4 p.m. at Hershey Park Arena on Friday afternoon.
