Women's Hockey Drops Season Opener 9-0 to Manhattanville


PURCHASE, NY (November 4, 2022) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team dropped their home opener on the road to Manhattanville, falling to the Valiants 9-0 on Friday night. With the loss King's starts the season 0-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in UCHC play, while Manhattanville starts 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play

Manhattanville (1-0-0, 1-0-0) started quickly as Gabrielle Cox opened the scoring at 1:02. Just under four minutes later the Valiants doubled their lead as Morgan Miller scored at 4:52. Following the second Manhattanville goal, King's (0-1-0, 0-1-1) got their first power play of the game but were unable to convert. The Valiants added two more goals late in the period to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. 
 
The second period was much like the first, but sophomore goaltender Syd Dahl was up to the task keeping Manhattanville at bay, until the Valiants broke through at 12:03 on Fjolla Berisha's goal. Manhattanville scored three more times before the end of the period, leading 8-0 after 40 minutes of play. 
 
Manhattanville added one more goal early in the third period, but that was all the scoring as King's fell in the opener 9-0. 

Dahl picked up the loss in net, making 48 saves on 57 shots. First-year Olivia McTavish and sophomore Jordan Dittmar led the Monarch offense as each tallied two shots. King's went 14-for-58 in the face-off circle, led by Dittmar who went 5-14 and first-year Madison Vaughan who went 3-9. The Monarchs went 0-3 on the power play, and 3-4 on the penalty kill. 
 
Franny Gerardi picked up the win in net stopping all nine shots faced. Cox led the Valiants offense, tallying four goals on 13 shots and picking up an assist. Manhattanville won 44 of 58 face-offs in the contest, while going 1-4 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. 

King's will return to action on Saturday in the second game against Manhattanville with a puck drop set for 3 p.m. in Purchase, NY.
