WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 5, 2022) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team's late effort came up short, as the Monarchs fell to visiting Chatham University 1-0 on Saturday from Revolution Ice Centre. With the loss King's falls to 1-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in UCHC play, while Chatham improves to 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference action.
It was a quick start for Chatham (3-1-0, 2-0-0) who fired of the first two shots of the game, forcing senior goaltender
Ismael Ralsten into two early saves. King's (1-3-0, 1-2-0) responded with the next two shots as sophomores
Tyler Blanchard and
Jack Cooper's efforts were negated. The teams traded chances for the remainder of the period, but the game remained scoreless after the first period.
The Monarchs came out fast in the second period with four of the first five shots of the frame from Blanchard, sophomore
Kent Lee, senior
Rob Sheehan, and first-year Samuel Libetti. The Cougars responded with the next five shots, before the teams traded chances until the final four minutes of the period. With King's on the power play, Evan Mitchell took a pass from Aidan Girduckis, scoring shorthanded, giving Chatham a 1-0 lead at 16:37, a lead they took into the second intermission.
Once again King's got the first opportunity of the third period as sophomore
Patrick Nowak and Cooper registered the first two shots of the frame, before Chatham replied with the next two. The Monarchs upped the pressure looking for an equalizer, pulling Ralsten for the extra skater with just over two minutes to play. With the extra skater, King's rattled off nine shots, including two golden chances for sophomore
Erik Borschevsky in the dying seconds, but King's were unable to find the tying goal, falling to Chatham 1-0.
Ralsten picked up the loss in net but was strong again in net making 33 saves on 34 shots. Blanchard led the King's attack with 11 shots on goal, while Cooper added seven. The Monarchs won 34 of 61 face-offs, led by Blanchard who won 21 of 27 and sophomore
Alexander Ray who won seven of 12. The Monarchs continued their strong penalty kill going 5-5, while going 0-3 on the power play.
Ricardo Gonzalez made 30 saves to pick up the win for the Cougars. Mithcell led the Chatham offense picking up goal on six shots on goal, while Warhofig notched five, and Dimitri Wey and Carson Grainer added four shots. Chatham won 27 of 61 face-offs and went 0-3 on the power play, and 5-5 on the penalty kill.
King's returns to action on Friday night as the Monarchs travel to Aston, PA to take on Neumann University at 7 p.m. in UCHC action.
