Men's Hockey Battles to 3-3 Tie Against Arcadia, Earns Extra Point in the Shootout

WILKES-BARRE, PA (December 3, 2022) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team battled to a 3-3 against Aradia University on Saturday at the Revolution Ice Centre, earning the extra point, thanks to first-year Samuel Libetti's shootout winner. King's moves to 2-6-1 overall, 2-4-1 in UCHC play, and 1-1-1 in MAC play, while Arcadia moves to 3-5-2 overall, 3-3-2 I UCHC play, and 2-0-2 in MAC play.

King's (2-6-4, 2-4-1, 1-1-1) started quickly, opening the scoring just over a minute in on the power-play. Sophomore Casey Gerstein found the back of the net at 1:04 as fellow sophomore Kent Lee and first-year Wyatt Alan collected the assists. Arcadia (3-5-2, 3-3-2, 2-0-2) replied quickly rattling off the next six shots of the contest, but senior goaltender Tyer Sayger was up to the task. The Monarchs doubled their lead with just over four minutes to play in the period, as senior Rob Sheehan scored off assists from Allan and sophomore Luke Babilon at 15:52, to give King's a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Arcadia jumped out quickly in the second period, cutting the King's lead in half, just eight seconds into the frame on a tally from Aaron Hamel. The Knights tied up the game just over six minutes later, as Russ Tedesco scored at 6:37. It did not take King's long to retake the lead, as Gerstein sprung sophomore Tyker Blanchard on a shorthanded breakaway, and Blanchard made no mistake, finding the net to put the Monarchs back in front 3-2 8:48. Arcadia answered quickly however, as Donnie Feldman scored at 9:32 to send the teams into the second intermission knotted at three.

King's tallied the first two shots of the third period, before Arcadia recorded the next two, but neither side scored as the game headed to overtime, tied at three. In overtime, the Monarchs recorded six shots, while the Knights notched four shots, but once again neither team converted, as the game headed to a shootout. The first two shooters for teams were stopped, before the third Knights skater converted, but Gerstein found the back of the net, to send the shootout to extra rounds. After two stops a piece from each goalie, Sayger made one more, before Libetti's effort deflected off goaltender Jeb Lindy's stick and bouncing across the goal line, giving the Monarchs the extra point.

Sayger made his first start of the season, making 50 saves on 53 shots. Offensively, King's were led by Gerstein, who recorded two points, a goal and an assist, and Allan who notched two assists. Blanchard led the Monarchs with seven shots, while Gerstein and first-year Matthew Metsa added five. King's won 40 of 83 face-offs, led by sophomore Alexander Ray who went 13-22 in the circle. On special teams, the Monarchs went 1-6 on the power-play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
