Duncan's Goal Lifts Monarchs Over Cross-Town Rival, 2-1

PITTSTON, PA (February 16, 2022) -- Sophomore Dianna Duncan got a great feed from first year Becca Allen as she found the back of the net with 7:03 left in regulation to lead the King's College women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over cross-town rival Wilkes University in MAC and UCHC play on Wednesday night in the Revolution Ice Centre.

The win gives King's the series split with the Colonels and sees the Monarchs improve to 2-20-0 for the season and 2-16-0 against conference opponents, while Wilkes falls to 3-17-0 overall, 3-15-0 in conference play.

The Colonels got on the board first in the opening period as Kendall Castro scored at the 7:41 mark off a pass from Elizabeth Spoon as part of a six-shot period from the visitors.

The Monarchs were able to tie the matchup in the second as graduate student Josée Aitken recorded her second goal of the season in an even-strength opportunity at the 9:11 mark off assists from first year Ani Quindipan and junior Ali Noeding.

The final dagger came at the 12:57 mark of the third period as Duncan recorded her first career goal on Allen's assist. The Monarchs defensive efforts paired with first year goalkeeper Syd Dahl's immaculate saves down the stretch earned King's their second victory of the 2021-22 season.

Duncan and sophomore Sam Kulman led King's with four shots each, while six Monarchs each tallied three shots in the win. Aitken posted 10 face off wins for the night, while Allen and first year Jordan Dittmar added nine face off wins each. Defensively, senior Meghan Mietlicki posted two blocked shots, while Dahl made 26 saves on 27 shots faced to earn the win between the pipes tonight.

The Colonels saw seven shots from both Kendall Castro and Rachel Morey in the loss, with Morey adding 11 face off wins. Spoon and Gianna Manzi each totaled four blocks, while Addy Olson recorded 27 saves in the loss.

As a team, the Monarchs edged the Colonels in shots, outshooting the visitors 31-28. King's also held the advantage in face offs, winning 31 over Wilkes' 20.

The Monarchs are back in action for their final weekend of the regular season on Friday, February 18 as they will celebrate senior day and pink day against Alvernia University with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop. King's will then make the return trip down to face the Golden Wolves on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
