ROCHESTER, NY (February 6, 2022) -- First year goaltender
Syd Dahl made an impressive 64 saves on Sunday afternoon as the King's College women's ice hockey team held high-scoring Nazareth College to seven goals in a spirited 7-1 loss to the highly ranked and first place Golden Flyers in Rochester.
The Golden Flyers (20-1-0, 16-0-0 UCHC) did most of their scoring in the first period as they lit the lamp five times on 31 shots. Nazareth had seven different goal scorers in the game while 10 different skaters recorded at least one point.
King's put on a great defensive performance in the second period led by Dahl who stopped all 23 shots she saw in the period including a few amazing saves on a couple of breakaways and huge one-timers from the Nazareth forwards. The Monarchs scored on their first power play opportunity of the game following a great defensive play by
Jordan Dittmar. Dittmar caught up to a Nazareth forward on a breakaway attempt during the opportunity and poked the puck away not allowing a shot. The Monarchs took back control of the puck as
Ali Noeding passed it up the ice to
Josée Aitken. Aitken and
Erin King had shots stopped in front of goal before Aitken knocked the puck into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and 15th of her career. King recorded her second assist of the weekend, sixth of the year, and 11th of her career. The assist for Noeding was her third of the year and fourth of her career.
The Golden Flyers added two goals in the final period to set the final score. Dahl and the Monarch offense held Nazareth, who entered the game with one of the best power play numbers in the nation, off the scoreboard on four different penalty kills.
Aitken led the squad with two shots on goal and five faceoff wins. Noeding, King,
Kait Wolf,
Savannah Willard, and
Emma Clark had a shot each. Dahl recorded the sixth-most saves in a Division III game this season along with the second-most by an UCHC goalie.
The Monarchs will be off next weekend before hosting Wilkes on Wednesday February 16 at 6:30 pm. King's will play at Revolution Ice Centre twice in the final week of the season before closing out the season at Alvernia.
