PITTSTON, PA (February 8, 2022) – The King's College men's ice hockey team took another step forward in their attempt to qualify for the United Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs on Tuesday evening by earning a point in a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to visiting Stevenson University.
King's (4-16-0, 3-11-0 UCHC, 1-6-0 MAC) out shot the Mustangs (14-5-1, 10-3-0 UCHC, 4-0-0 MAC) 35-27 as reining MAC Defensive Player of the Week and UCHC Goaltender of the Week Ryan Kenny stopped 34 shots to earn his fifth straight win and fourth overtime win of the year. Stevenson entered the game third in the UCHC standings and were receiving votes in this week's USCHO Poll.
Stevenson got on the board first in the second period as Nick Dineen scored his second goal of the year at 6:14. King's tied the game in the third period at 7:36 when
Kent Lee tallied his sixth goal of the year with a laser shot off assists by
Mahingan Decontie and
Aaron Frenkel. Decontie recorded his fourth assist of the season while Frenkel tallied his eighth. King's had a great chance to win in regulation as
Casey Gerstein had an excellent opportunity at the goal in the last minute but his shot sailed just wide. Ryan Patrick scored the game-winner 59 seconds into the overtime period with a power play goal for his seventh of the year.
Both goaltenders played fantastic in the thrilling game with
Matt Bidini matching his counterpart with 25 saves including a few stellar glove saves.
Jack Cooper led the team with eight shots while Gerstein had five.
Mauro D'Alessandro led a huge defensive effort with five blocked shots and a few big hits on the Mustang forwards.
Tyler Blanchard topped the squad with 10 faceoff wins.
King's sits in ninth place in the conference standings with four games left. The Monarchs are two points behind Lebanon Valley College for the eighth spot and seven behind Chatham University and Neumann University. The Monarchs face the highest-ranked opponent the program has ever played on Friday as second-ranked and conference-leading Utica College visit Revolution Ice Centre for a 7 pm game. King's will then host Nazareth College on Saturday at 4 pm.
