Box Score 2 LAKELAND, FL (March 11, 2022) – A thrilling walk off in the opener before a defensive battle in the night cap saw the King's College baseball team split their double header with SUNY Fredonia to improve to 4-2 for the 2022 season. The Monarchs will finish their spring training trip tomorrow morning before getting back up north for their non-conference home opener.
Game 1 - W, 4-3:
The Monarchs used a two-run second inning to secure the win in the opener over SUNY Fredonia on Friday afternoon. Fredonia (4-1) plated the first run in the top of the first on a one-out sacrifice fly before adding another tally in the top of the second, leading 2-0, thanks to a leadoff triple that was driven in on an RBI single in the next at bat.
King's (4-1) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. First year
Zach Day hit a one-out single and advanced to second as sophomore
Gregory Ahlstrom worked a walk. Sophomore
Aaron Mason singled to score Day and a Blue Devils error allowed Ahlstrom to cross as the first game was tied, 2-2.
Both offenses stalled as there were just two hits over the next two innings. Fredonia regained the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a one-out RBI triple before some solid defense by the Monarchs limited any other runs in that inning. King's answered in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game back up as Mason worked a lead off walk and advanced to second on a single from senior
Matt Bound. Both runners moved up a base thanks to a sacrifice bunt from first year
Jacob Sutton, and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Brennan Schneider plated the tying run, 4-4.
King's had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but failed to capitalize until the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Devils made a pitching change and Sutton reached safely on a fielder's choice with one out. Sutton stole second to put him in scoring position when Schneider delivered the walk-off RBI single to earn the 5-4 win over SUNY Fredonia in the opener of the doubleheader.
Schneider, Day, Mason, and Bound all recorded a hit in the pitcher's duel in game one this afternoon, as Schneider led King's with two RBIs. Senior
Colby Toth earned the win in relief, throwing for two innings and allowing just one hit. Senior
Andrew Steidle threw well as the starter, giving up just two earned runs off four hits and striking out four.
Pat Bigham led Fredonia with two hits, including a triple, and a run, while Kenny Ynoa was given the loss in one inning of work, allowing one earned run.
Game 2 – L, 1-4:
A defensive and pitchers duel ensued in the second game of the doubleheader. Fredonia plated a run in the second on a Monarchs error and then in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. King's got their lone run of the game in the fourth to pull within one, 2-1.
The Blue Devils plated two more in the sixth on a two-run shot to post the 4-1 final.
Day recorded the lone multi-hit game for the Monarchs, while Steidle and Yochem each recorded hits. Senior
James DeNara recorded the loss in 3.2 innings of work, giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits with two strikeouts.
