NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (Mach 8, 2022) -- After storming out for a dominant offensive performance in their first four games, the King's College softball team's bats went cold in their Tuesday doubleheader against Penn College as they fell, 4-2 and 9-0, to the Wildcats. The Monarchs drop to 4-2 for the season while the Wildcats improve to 3-1.
Game 1 - L, 4-2:
A low scoring game saw Penn College (2-1) get on the board first with two runs in the first thanks to an RBI double and an RBI single up the middle, leading 2-0. A quick defensive inning in the second set up King's (4-1) to record their first run of the game after a lead off double from junior
Olivia Krupski allowed her to score on a two-out RBI single to right from junior
Bailey Loyack.
The Monarchs were able to score the game at two in the top of the fifth as sophomore
Kiersten Krouse earned a one-out walk and stole second. Krouse then advanced to third during senior
Lindsey Leppo's at bat before scoring on a throwing error from the Wildcats as the score was tied at two runs each.
Penn College responded in the bottom of the inning on a two-run shot to right center that would stand as the game-wining runs.
Just three runs were allowed in the final stanzas as Penn College earned the 4-2 win over King's to hand the Monarchs their first loss of 2022.
Loyack posted a two-hit game to lead King's, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss. Sophomore
Brandi McIntosh recorded the loss as the starter, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up all four runs on four hits and striking out three.
Jordan Specht and Margaret Mangene posted matching 2-for-2 stat lines, while Specht totaled three RBIs and two runs scored with a double and a home run. Kyla Benner earned the win in the complete seven-inning game, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Game 2 - L, 9-0:
Offensive struggles proved extremely costly in game two of the doubleheader. A quick first inning saw both teams go three-and-out, but the Wildcats found their rhythm in the top of the second, plating three on two hits to take the early 3-0 lead. Penn College (3-1) tacked on two more in the top of the third to go up 5-0, and another run in the fourth saw King's (4-2) face a 6-0 deficit.
Each team was able to record a hit each between the fifth and sixth innings, but the Wildcats had one more final surge in the top of the seventh as they scored three more on three hits. A one-out single from sophomore
Sydney Bachman was not enough in the bottom of the seventh as the Monarchs fell, 9-0, to Penn College to finish their third day in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Leppo, Bachman, and sophomore
Molly Gillette earned hits in the loss. Gillette also posted the loss, throwing for all seven innings and striking out three.
Four Penn College players posted multi-hit games for the Wildcats in the win, while three drove in two runs each. Mackenzie Weaver posted the win, going the distance, as she allowed just three hits in the game.
