Early Deficit Dooms King's in Loss at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA (April 12, 2022) -- The King's College baseball team faced an early deficit at Misericordia University on Wednesday afternoon which proved costly in the 14-4 loss in MAC Freedom play. The Monarchs fall to 8-15 for the season with a 2-11 MAC Freedom mark, while the Cougars improve to 19-11 and 9-4 in conference play.

Misericordia (19-11, 9-4 MAC Freedom) got out to a hot start in the series opener as they plated eight runs on six hits in the first inning. A two-run home run in the second put the Cougars ahead, 10-0, before a lead off double in the third was enough to score another run in the third to put the hosts up, 11-0.

The Cougars tacked on two more runs on with a two-run home run in the fifth before scoring their final run of the game in the sixth as they went ahead, 14-0.

King's (8-15, 2-11 MAC Freedom) got two runs back in the eighth as junior Pat Noone worked a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double to right center from first year Zach Day. A sacrifice fly from junior Brandon Loner drove in Noone before a single down the left field line from sophomore Chase Yochem plated a second run for King's as they closed within 14-2.

The Monarchs offense clicked one last time in the top of the ninth in a two-out rally. Sophomore Devin Maciejewski hit a two-out single up the middle to put a runner on for junior Will McIntosh's two-run home run, the first of his career, that would post the 14-4 final in the MAC Freedom contest.

Yochem and sophomore Greg Ahlstrom each recorded two hits in the loss, while McIntosh drove in two out of the Monarchs four runs of the game. Senior Andrew Steidle recorded the loss as the starter, giving up eight runs in 1.0 innings of work. Senior Randy Paulino threw well in relief, pitching 3.0 innings and holding the Cougars without a hit.

Three different Cougars recorded multi-hit games as part of their 12-hit effort, while Joe Comins recorded two hits, scored a run, and drove in a team-high four RBIs. David McCurry earned the win as the starter, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings and giving up five Monarch hits.

King's will finish their MAC Freedom series with the Cougars tomorrow afternoon as first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m. at Lipo Field.
