Day Records First Career Home Run in Doubleheader Loss

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 2, 2022) -- First year Zach Day recorded the first home run of his career in the red and gold in game two of the doubleheader series as the King's College baseball team was swept by scores of 6-2 and 9-1 in the MAC Freedom doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology. With the losses at Lipo Field on Saturday afternoon, the Monarchs fall to 7-10 overall and 1-7 in the MAC Freedom, while the Ducks improve to 18-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference standings.

Game 1 - L, 2-6:
Stevens (18-7, 6-2 MAC Freedom) plated the first run of the series in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single to left. The visitors tacked on another run in the fourth off an RBI single to center to go ahead 2-0 on the Monarchs.

A big seventh inning saw four more runs cross for the Ducks as they recorded those four runs on just two errors to hold the daunting 6-0 advantage heading into the final at bat for the Monarchs. King's (7-10, 1-7 MAC Freedom) strung together three hits to score two runs. Day doubled to right center to lead off the inning before scoring on a single up-the-middle from sophomore Chase Yochem. A double from Brandon Loner plated Yochem with no outs before the Ducks defense finished off the game, handing King's the 6-2 loss in game one of the three-game series.

Day, Yochem Loner, and senior Seth Laky all recorded hits in the loss, with Yochem and Loner driving in the team's two runs in the game. Senior Shane Beyer took the loss as the starter on the mound for the Monarchs, throwing for 6.0 innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out seven.

Hunter Silvernail and Ryan Finegan both posted matching stat lines of 2-for-3 in their at bats with a run and an RBI each. Jordan Fisse recorded the win as the Ducks starter, throwing for 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on two hits.

Game 2 - L, 1-9:
The offensive struggles continued for the Monarchs in game two. Stevens scored three early runs in the top of the first thanks to two RBI singles, leading 3-0. Day recorded his first home run as a Monarch in the bottom of the inning to close the deficit to 3-1 after one inning of action.

Just two hits were allowed in the second and third innings before the Stevens bats got going again in the fourth. The Ducks saw six runs cross in the fourth thanks to five hits as they went ahead 9-1. Both defenses put on a show down the stretch as there was just one more hit recorded in the final three innings of play as the Ducks posted the 9-1 final to record the doubleheader sweep over the Monarchs in MAC Freedom play.

Day's  homer stood as the lone hit of the game for the Monarchs offense. Sophomore Brennen Schneider recorded the loss as the starter in 3.1 innings of work.

Brett Mendez went 3-for-5 with a run to lead the Ducks in game two, while Finegan drove in a team-high three runs in the win. Leo Bristow earned the win in his first appearance of the season, allowing just one earned run on one hit in 3.0 innings pitched.
