Men's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime in Season Finale

MADISON, NJ (April 30, 2022) – The King's College men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime on the road at FDU-Florham. The Monarchs closed out their season, leaving everything out on the field as they fell 9-8 in a hard fought battle.

The first quarter proved to be slow for both teams. Brian Stewart got things started for the Devils, just over a minute into the opening quarter of play. The majority of the quarter was scoreless until Michael Stewart got the Devils on the board again at the 2:05 mark. The first quarter closed out with the Devils up 2-0.

FDU continued their run, scoring less than a minute into the second quarter to open up a 3-0 lead. The Monarch defense shut the Devils down in the second, leaving FDU scoreless for the remainder of the period. The Monarchs opened up a slew a scoring at the 12:52 mark as first year Ben Spencer found the back of the net off the assist from fellow first year Matt Kimberlin. Spencer again snuck one past the goalie just over 2 minutes later to cut the deficit to 1. Spencer continued his dominant quarter, completing his second quarter hat trick at the 7:56 mark to tie the game at 3. About 2 and a half minutes later, senior Alec Martin notched another for the Monarchs off the assist of senior Brendan Gambino to put King's up 4-3 heading into halftime.

Ben Spencer launched the scoring for the Monarchs again, scoring at the 12:44 mark of the third quarter to extend the Monarch lead to 2 as the scoreboard read 5-3 in favor of King's. FDU answered back with a goal of their own about 4 and a half minutes later. Senior Paul Trabucco took the pass from Spencer 2 minutes later and added a goal of his own to give the Monarchs their 2 goal lead back. FDU closed out the scoring in the third quarter, adding 2 more to tie the game at 6 heading into the fourth quarter.

Senior Gabe Vansuch got on the board early in the fourth quarter thanks to Kimberlin's second assist of the game. A run of 10 minutes passed before either team scored again. Brenden Gambino added a goal of his own with about 2 minutes left to play in regulation, giving the Monarchs an 8-6 lead. Just about 30 seconds later, FDU cut the lead to 1 before tying the game at 8 with 30 seconds left to play. The buzzer sounded to end the fourth with the teams tied up at 8 heading into extra time.

The Monarch defense held out strong for the first 2 minutes of the extra period. Brendan Fabin finally connected on a shot to give the Devils the victory 9-8.

Ben Spencer led the Monarch offense, totaling 5 points on 4 goals and an assist. Senior John Shaffer anchored the Monarch defense with 4 caused turnovers while picking up 4 groundballs along the way. Between the pipes, junior Matt Wall stopped 14 shots and picked up 4 groundballs. The Monarchs combined for a 9-21 record at the faceoff dot but sophomore Geno Casciello earns congratulations as he picked up his 100th career faceoff win.

The Devils were led by Brenden Fabin who totaled 5 points on 4 goals and an assist. Michael Stewart also added 3 goals of his own. Macgyver Hay lead the FDU defense with 7 caused turnovers while picking up 9 groundballs along the way. Dan Schlupp played a complete game in net, stopping 6 shots and picking up 5 groundballs.
