Yair and Miller Lead Men's Soccer to 2-1 Win Over Scranton

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 1, 2022) --- Liam Yair scored in the first half, before Austin Miller scored his first career goal, as the King's College Men's Soccer defeated the University of Scranton on Thursday afternoon 2-1.

King's came out ready to go in the opening half, controlling the play and keeping the Royals pinned back. Yair fired off the first shot of the game in the seventh minute, but his effort was blocked. Scranton then began to settle into the game midway through the opening half. However, Yair opened the scoring from 20-yards out, rifling a shot of the crossbar and in, putting the Monarchs up 1-0 in the 38th minute.

Following the Yair goal, the Royals upped their pressure on King's firing off two more shots before the half, but could not beat goalkeeper Jake Forst, who was making his first career start. At the half Scranton led in shots, 6-5, but were unable to muster any shots on target. King's did lead at the half garnering two corner kicks, to Scranton's zero.

Coming out of the half, Scranton was determined to knot up the contest, but the King's defense would not break. The Monarchs led by Nate Horn at the backend finished the game blocking five shots.

Early in the second half, the Royals got their first chance as Sean Quin was able to get a shot away, but Forst was able to turn the shot away. Scranton continued their press, firing off the first seven shots of the second half.

The Monarchs however, broke through the high Scranton press, as Mike Davies played a lovely through ball into the path of Miller who got in behind the Royals defense, and slipped the ball past Scranton goalie Ryan Lally, putting King's up 2-0 in the 80th minute.

Down two goals, Scranton continued to press, and got a corner kick in the 87th minute. On the ensuing corner, clearing header from King's went right to Quin, whose shot beat Forst down low to the right post.

With the game at 2-1, King's was able to weather the rest of the storm, and hang on for the win, 2-1.

Scranton held the advantage in many statistical categories, outshooting King's 16-7, and finishing the contest with five corners, to King's four corners.

Yair finished with a goal, while Davies picked up an assist, and Miller finished with a goal and an assist providing the helper on Yair's opener.

Forst picked up the win in his first career start, tallying two saves on the afternoon.

With the win, King's starts the season 1-0, beginning their second straight season at 1-0.

King's will look to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2014, as the Monarchs will host Cairn University on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 pm at McCarthy Stadium.
