MADISON, NJ (September 24, 2022) -- With the King's College football team trailing by one score,
Teone Sherrod came up big with 2:06 left in the third quarter as he intercepted a Devils pass and returned it 47-yards to the end zone to give the Monarchs the 27-23 win over FDU-Florham in MAC play on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs extend their road-win streak to two and improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in MAC play, while the Devils drop their second straight and fall to 2-2 with an 0-2 conference mark.
The King's (2-1, 1-1 MAC) defense came out strong to start the game and forced a three-and-out before
Tommy Souriyavong forced a fumble on the punt and recovered the ball on the FDU-Florham (2-2, 0-2 MAC) eight-yard line to set up the opening drive for the Monarchs. It took just 1:24 off the game clock for
Shemar Ellis to run it in from a yard out to put King's up 6-0 early.
Both teams came up empty on their possessions to finish the first quarter with the Monarchs driving. Sixteen seconds into the second quarter, King's converted their drive as
Tyler Moore found
Tyler Carey for a 41-yard touchdown reception, and the extra-point attempt from
Kyle Prescavage was successful as the Monarchs held a 13-0 lead with 14:44 to go in the half.
FDU-Florham found some rhythm offensively on their next drive, delivering on a seven-play, 66-yard drive over 3:03 of action as Ryon Thomas completed a pass to Michael DeSantis for a 20-yard touchdown reception. On the point-after attempt,
Jassiem Lettsome blocked the kick to limit the Devils to just six points on the drive. The Devils tied the game on their next offensive possession with a six-yard rush from Ryon Thomas, and the team's traded empty possessions down the stretch as they went into the break tied, 13-13.
Out of the break, the Devils capitalized on their first two drives of the quarter as Chris DiMedio connected for a 26-yard field goal before Ryon Thomas completed a pass to Connor Perez for a 71-yard touchdown reception as the Devils pulled ahead, 23-13.
On the first play of their possession, Moore found Carey for a 72-yard touchdown catch and Prescavage tacked on the extra point to close within 23-20 with 4:25 to go in the quarter. Then on the ensuing drive, Sherrod delivered arguably the play of the game for the Monarchs as he intercepted a pass from Ryon Thomas at the FDU-Florham 47 and returned the ball all the way to the end zone. The extra-point attempt was successful from Prescavage as King's went ahead 27-23 and the Devils took possession heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.
The Devils offense was driving with just over four minutes left i the game, but on a 4th and 2 opportunity from the King's 33,
Dylan White delivered a sack on Ryon Thomas to force a change in possession. FDU-Florham had one final chance to extend this game, but the Monarchs defense came up big again, this time as
Trevor Gleason sacked Ryon Thomas on 4th and 2 from the King's 28, forcing a fumble that was recovered by
Dallas Solomon. King's would kneel out the remaining game clock to secure the 27-23 win in Madison, NJ in the MAC match up.
Tyler Moore was strong in the pocket today, completing 16 passes on 25 attempts for 207 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. The run game was led by
Shemar Ellis with 51 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown, while
Tyler Carey led the Monarch receivers with 118 yards on four catches with two touchdowns.
The King's defense was led by
Brendan Mozeleski with 11 tackles, including 1.0 tackles for loss, while
Amir Gibson posted eight tackles.
Trevor Gleason recorded seven tackles, including 3.0 tackles for a loss of 16 yards and 2.0 sacks for a loss of 12 yards with a forced fumble. In addition,
Joseph Carchio posted seven tackles, and
Dylan White added six.
On special teams,
Anthony Prato recorded 203 punting yards on five attempts for an average of 40.6 yards per punt with one inside the 20-yard line, while
Kyle Prescavage went 3-for-4 on extra-point attempts with 272 kickoff yards for an average of 54.4 yards per attempt.
FDU-Florham saw Ryon Thomas post 20 completions on 29 attempts for 224 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, while Kwanir Edwards totaled 82 rush yards. Connor Perez led the Devils receivers with 99 yards on four receptions, and Joseph Randazzo led the defense with eight tackles, a break up, and 0.5 tackles for a loss of three yards.
As a team, the Monarchs recorded 220 yards of total offense and went 3-for-5 on fourth-down conversions while holding the Devils 0-for-4 on their fourth-down opportunities. King's was also efficient in the red zone as they were a perfect 1-for-1.
The Monarchs will be back on the road next Saturday as they travel to Williamsport, Pa. to take on the Warriors of Lycoming College. The MAC contest is set for a 1:00 p.m. kick off at David Person Field.
