WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 28, 2022) --- The King's College men's soccer team picked up momentum heading into MAC Freedom play as the Monarchs defeated the visiting Wildcats of Penn College 1-0 Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium. With the win, King's improves to 4-4-2 on the season, while Penn College falls to 2-5-3.
King's (4-4-2) came out of the gates looking to take control of the game, and that's what they did, firing off the first three shots of the game, with the first coming from junior
Christopher Vollrath in the sixth minute. Penn College (2-5-3) responded by tallying four of the next five shots, but from that moment on, it was all King's as the Monarchs recorded the final six shots of the half. Neither side was able to breakthrough however, so the teams headed to the break scoreless.
The squads traded shots over the first fifteen minutes of the second half, yet again the Monarchs would take over and control the game. With just under ten minutes to play, sophomore
Austin Miller was fouled on the edge of the box, leading to a glorious chance for King's. First-year
Philip Permyashkin stepped up to the free kick and made no mistake as his shot beat the wall, and glanced off the post, before finding the back of the net, giving King's the 1-0 lead in the 81
st minute. The Wildcats pushed for an equalizer, but the Monarchs defense held firm, giving King's the 1-0 win.
It was a dominant performance for King's, outshooting Penn College 14-6 overall, including a 4-0 mark on shots on target.
Permyashkin led the offense for King's, picking uptwo points on his one goal. Sophomore
Bryce Nunes tallied four shots, while Vollrath and junior
Liam Yair both added two shots. Junior
Jake Forst got the start in net, facing four shots, picking up the win and clean sheet.
Penn College was led on the attack by Mitchell Lesh who recorded three shots, while Brandon Ratjavong, Matt Neeson, and Tad Shellenberger all notched one shot.
Cole Catherman got the start for the Wildcats, making three saves, picking up the loss.
The Monarchs return to action on Saturday for their MAC Freedom opener, as the squad travels to Hoboken, NJ to take on Stevens Institute of Technology, with kickoff scheduled for 3 pm.
