Late Goal Upsets Monarchs in Home Opener

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 7, 2022) -- Junior Ali Tedik netted her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute to tie up the game, but the visiting University of Scranton Royals tallied the game-winning goal just 2:15 later as the King's College field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 contest to the Royals in McCarthy Stadium. With the loss, the Monarchs head into the weekend at 1-1 overall, while the Royals improve to 2-0.

The two teams traded early runs before Scranton (2-0) broke the scoreless contest with 4:50 left in the first quarter as Gabby Lorenzo  scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Marissa Campbell.

The play of the first half came in the 27th minute of the second period as junior goalkeeper Ellie Glatz made an incredible stop on a penalty stroke by Redding to hold the Royals at bay. The Monarchs fired off shots in the period as well as graduate student Hannah Robbins and junior Ashley Thalassinos both found some space, but both shots were just off the mark as King's (1-1) went into the halftime break trailing 1-0.

A much slower pace ensued in the second half as neither team capitalized on their possessions, heading into the final stanza with the Monarchs still trailing, 1-0.

With the final 15 minutes on the clock, both team's increased their intensity and the play saw the Monarchs hit their stride as Tedik tied up the game at one a piece with 6:57 remaining, taking advantage of a deflected pass and finding the back of the net.

Tedik fired off two more shots in the next two minutes of action, but with time running down and the game clock reading 4:27, the Royals saw Lauren Franco finish after another excellent save from Glatz to put Scranton ahead, 2-1.

King's had their best look of the final stretch on a penalty corner with 3:45 remaining, but the Scranton defense maintained their composure and shut the door on the Monarchs comeback to post the 2-1 final in non-conference play in McCarthy Stadium.

Tedik led the Monarchs with a goal on three shots, while Thalassinos, Robbins, and seniors Sara Whitesell and Jessie Smalley all recorded shots in the loss. Glatz was solid in goal, making eight saves, as she picked up her first loss of the season.

The Royals were led by Lorezno and Franco with their goals and Campbell with her assist. Inside the box score, Katie Redding totaled eight shots on goal, while Abraldes added four shots.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Friday evening as they take on Marywood University on the road at 7:00 p.m. A quick turnaround will see King's back in McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Immaculata.
