Gerstein Stays Hot as Men's Hockey Earns 3-3 Tie at Albertus Magnus

Box Score NEW HAVEN, CT (January 14, 2023) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team hit the road to take on Albertus Magnus, battling back from a 3-1 second period deficit to earn a 3-3 tie against the Falcons. With the tie King's moves to 3-9-2 on the season, while Albertus Magnus moves to 13-5-1.
 
Albertus Magnus (13-5-1) started quickly, firing off three of the first four shots of the contest, in the opening two minutes, forcing senior goaltender Ismael Ralsten into some early saves. King's (3-9-2) responded with a couple of shots, before the Falcons opened the scoring at 6:41 on a goal from Coleton Cianci. The Monarchs wasted little time tying up the game as sophomore Casey Gerstein found the back of the net on an unassisted goal 8:51. Albertus Magnus jumped back in front on a Sam Anderson goal at 16:55 to take a 2-1 lead after the opening frame.
 
The teams traded chances throughout much of the second period, before the Falcons pushed their lead to 3-1 on Anderson's second goal of the game at 14:04. Once again King's answered quickly as sophomore Patrick Nowak tallied his first collegiate goal to cut the deficit to one at 15:30. King's kept battling in the period and were rewarded as Gerstein notched his second goal of the contest, off assists from first-year Matthew Metsa, who tallied his first career point, and sophomore Kent Lee, at 19:32 to send the game to the third period, even at three.
 
In the third period, both squads had chances to jump in front, but neither offense was able to cash in, as the game headed to overtime. Once again both teams had opportunities for the game winner, but both goaltenders stood strong as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
 
Ralsten returned to action in goal, turning away 46 of 49 shots. Gerstein led the offense with two goals, he second two-goal game in the last three games, while four other Monarchs tallied one point. King's won 35 of 83 face-offs on the evening and went 1-3 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.
 
Joseph Giacobbo got the start in net for the Falcons making 25 saves on 28 shots. Anderson paced the Albertus Magnus offense, tallying two goals, while five other Falcons scored one point. Albertus Magnus went 1-4 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill, while winning 48 of 83 face-offs.
 
King's will stay on the road as the Monarchs travel to western New York to take on Nazareth in a conference matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday in Rochester.
