Arkhypenko Scores First Career Goal as Men's Hockey Falls to Nazareth 4-1

ROCHESTER, NY (January 21, 2023) --- The King's College men's ice hockey team led after two periods, but four unanswered goals by Nazareth gave the Golden Flyers a 4-1 win on Saturday. With the loss King's falls to 3-11-2 overall and 2-8-1 in UCHC play, while Nazareth improves to 11-4-2 overall and 9-2-1 in conference.

Nazareth (10-4-2, 8-2-1) came out of the gates, starting quickly, getting an early power play, but the King's (3-11-2, 2-8-1) penalty kill was up to the task. Through the middle part of the period the teams traded chances before, sophomore Denys Arkhypenko collected a loss puck and fired it home to put the Monarchs on top 1-0 at 18:22, a lead that King's took into the first intermission.

Nazareth began pushing for an equalizer in the second period, getting a couple of power play opportunities, but senior goaltender Tyler Sayger and the special teams unit again shut down the Golden Flyers. Late in the period, it looked King's had added an insurance marker, but the whistle was blown before the puck entered the goal, as the Monarchs remained on top 1-0 after 40 minutes. Trailing by a goal in the third period, Nazareth tallied four unanswered goals, to take the contest 4-1.

Sayger got the start in goal, turning aside 34 of 37 shots faced. Offensively, King's were led by Arkhypenko, who notched his first career goal, and first-year Samuel Libetti who added an assist. The Monarchs won 27 of 65 face-offs, led by sophomore Tyler Blanchard who went 11-21 at the dot. King's went 5-5 on the penalty kill and 0-2 on the power play.

Matt Sayles got the start in net, stopping 19 of 20 shots faced. The Golden Flyers were led by Jeremy Swartz who tallied two goals in the contest, and Blake Frost who added one goal and an assist. Nazareth went 2-2 on the penalty kill and 0-5 on the power play, while winning 38 of 65 face-offs.

King's returns home to play host to Alvernia on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Huntington's Disease Awareness Game at the Revolution Ice Centre.
