Women's Hockey Skates to 2-2 Tie, Falls to Wilkes in the Shootout

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 31, 2023) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team earned a point, skating to a 2-2 tie with cross-town rival Wilkes University, but fell to the Colonels in the shootout. With the tie, King's moves to 0-17-2 overall, 0-14-2 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action, and 0-6-2 in MAC play, while Wilkes moves to 4-13-2 overall, 4-10-2 in UCHC play, and 2-4-2 in MAC action.

King's (0-17-2, 0-14-2, 0-6-2) started quickly and had a chance to open the scoring just over a minute into the contest, but sophomore Jordan Dittmar's effort was pulled off the goal line, keeping the game scoreless. Wilkes (4-13-2, 4-10-2, 2-4-2) responded with a stretch of chances, but sophomore goaltender Syd Dahl was up to the task. With just under six minutes to play in the opening frame, the Colonels struck first as Emma Guzdek found the back of the net to put Wilkes up 1-0 at 14:04, a lead that they took into the first intermission.

The Monarchs replied however, early into the second period, as first-year Olivia McTavish found the lose puck in a goal mouth scramble, poking it home, to tie the game at one, at 2:43. The teams traded opportunities for much of the remainder of the period, before Wilkes moved back in front on a power play goal late in the period. At 19:35, Rachel Morey's shot got through traffic and found the back of the net, to give the Colonels a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The third period was back-and-forth, until the Monarchs were given a power play with just over seven minutes to play in regulation. First-year Madison Vaughan won the ensuing face-off to fellow first-year Amanda Sokol, who found sophomore Kait Wolf, Wolf walked in and fired a shot up over the glove to tie the game at two at 13:01. With time winding down, King's had a golden chance to win it in regulation as Dittmar had an open goal, but the puck bounced over her stick as the game went to overtime. In the extra frame, the teams traded chances, before graduate student Issy Lebrun was sprung on a breakaway, but her effort was turned aside by Addy Olson, as the game headed to a shootout. In the shootout, Wilkes converted on one of two shots, while all three Monarchs were turned aside to give the Colonels the extra point.

Dahl was strong in net, turning aside 54 of 56 shots faced in the contest. Offensively, the Monarchs had six players tally a point, led by McTavish and Wolf who both tallied a goal, and Lebrun, Sokol, Vaughan, and junior Aspen Wallin, who all added an assist. King's won 24 of 56 face-offs, led by Dittmar, who won 10 of 16 draws. King's had a strong day on special teams, going 1-2 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

Olson got the start in net, stopping 22 of 24 shots. Wilkes were led by Abigail Barcless who tallied two assists in the contest, while Morey and Guzdek both added a goal apiece. The Colonels went 1-5 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill while winning 32 of 56 face-offs.

King's returns to home ice to take on 14th-ranked Nazareth College on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Revolution Ice Centre.
