Second Half Offensive Explosion Leads Monarchs to Victory

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 10, 2023) -- After a scoreless first half, the King's College women's soccer team exploded for five second half goals, sparked by a successful Chloe Weaver penalty kick that led the Monarchs to a 5-1 victory.

King's (5-5-2) and Alvernia University (1-10-2) each placed just one shot on target in the first half of play. The Monarchs changed the tone of the game in the second half when Weaver scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute to charge the squad's offense.

Maryanna Garcia found the back of the net in the 50th minute and was followed up by goals by Brook Finlay in the 52nd and 59th minutes. Finlay's first goal was assisted by Hailey Shillabeer and the second by Leah Sankey. The Monarchs offensive explosion saw the team notch four goals in 14 minutes to start the second half.

The Monarchs domination continued throughout the rest of the half as first year Eiland Brockett scored her first career goal on a breakaway where she put the ball past the diving goalkeeper to give the Monarchs a comfortable 5-0 advantage going into the final minutes.

In the 88th minute Macy McDonough slipped a ball into the Monarchs net to put Alvernia on the board. The late goal was not enough to compete with the Monarchs dominating second half efforts that earned them the 5-1 win.

Finlay scored twice for King's while Weaver, Garcia and Brockett were all able to notch one goal. Sankey and Shillabeer both wound up with assists.  Aspen Wallin made several miraculous saves in net, earning five total on the night.

Macy McDonough scored for the Golden Wolves on two shot attempts on the night. Brynn Bock picked up four saves in goal.

The Monarchs will return to McCarthy Stadium Saturday, October 14 to host Misericordia University in their third Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom game of the season. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
