WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 28, 2023) -- The visiting DeSales University put up two second-half goals to defeat the King's College women's soccer team, 2-0, at McCarthy Stadium in a must-win Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest. With the setback, the Monarchs finish the 2023 regular season 6-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the MAC Freedom, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-12-1 with a 4-3-0 conference mark.
DeSales (5-12-1, 4-3-0 MAC Freedom) had opportunities early in the opening half, but the King's (6-9-2, 2-4-1 MAC Freedom) kept up the defensive intensity as the game featured a 0-0 tie at the break.
The Monarchs came out of the locker room firing, using an early corner kick in the 47
th minute to get off a great look from
Maryanna Garcia, but the Bulldogs keeper maintained the scoreless contest. The teams traded shots before the Bulldogs got their first score on the board in the 63
rd minute. King's continued to pester the DeSales goal in an attempt to find the equalizer, as Garcia and and
Ashley Dukehart each had their chances, but the visiting Bulldogs put up a late tally with 2:10 to play to defeat the Monarchs, 2-0, in the MAC Freedom match up on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
Garcia paced the King's offense with four shots, including three on target, while
Aspen Wallin made six saves in the net for the Monarchs.
Emma Ribeiro scored both tallies for DeSales in the win on a team-high five shots with three on frame, while Elizabeth McCarthy assisted on both goals. Goalkeeper Jozlyn Minnema recorded three saves in the shutout victory.
Despite the outcome, King's had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks while posting eight shots in the loss.
