Clark, Tlatenchi Propel Monarchs to Two-Game Win Streak

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 4, 2023) -- Junior Emma Clark and first year Melanie Tlatenchi led the King's College field hockey team to an exciting 3-1 win over Lycoming College on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium, extending the Monarchs' win streak to two games and three of the last four. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 3-9 overall, while the Warriors drop to 4-6.

After an early penalty corner from Lycoming (4-6) five minutes into the game, King's (3-9) found their stride, sending in two shots and earning a penalty corner to begin putting pressure on the Warriors defense. Tlatenchi broke through for the Monarchs in the 13th minute on an assist from Clark to give King's the 1-0 edge after the opening quarter.

Lycoming found the back of the cage just 1:39 into the second off a penalty corner set, but King's had an immediate response as Clark posted her first goal of the game 55 seconds later off an initial attempt from Emma Bealla. The teams traded opportunities down the stretch before King's maintained their 2-1 lead at the halftime break.

It was all King's the remainder of the game as the Monarchs out shot the Warriors, 2-0, and had three corner opportunities to zero for their foes in the final 30 minutes. Back-to-back penalty corners in the 42nd minute set up a great pass across the circle from Hannah Chocallo to Clark to push the King's lead to 3-1 with 1:57 remaining in the third. Neither team had much momentum in the final 15 minutes of action as King's collected their second consecutive win and third in four games over Lycoming on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium.

Clark recorded five points on her two goals and an assist off a team-leading three shots with two on target. Tlatenchi earned two points on her goal off the only shot she took in the contest, while Bealla and Chocallo collected a point a piece on their assists. Additionally, Ashley Thalassinos fired off a pair of shots, and Davina Krappa made a defensive save to help preserve the victory. Grace Venis remained steady in goal, picking up her third career win with three saves.

Kelly Preston scored the lone goal for the Warriors on an assist from Katie Loughran, while both Riley Marines and Loghan Shelly tallied a pair of shots each. Isabella Bobé made one save in the complete-game effort in the cage.

The Monarchs were efficient in the win, scoring their three goals off four shots on target despite being out shot, 9-8, for the game. King's also earned four penalty corners in the win.

King's will begin their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) schedule on Saturday, traveling to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Stevens. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. on the road at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
