Gerstein Tallies Two in Setback at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 4, 2023) -- Casey Gerstein netted both of the King's College men's ice hockey team's goals in a 4-2 setback to the host Chatham University on Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh. With the setback in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC), the Monarchs stand at 1-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the UCHC, while the Cougars improve to 2-2-0 and 1-1-0 in conference.

Chatham (2-2-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) got on the board first in the second game of the series 5:49 into the game, but Gerstein netted his first tally on a power play thanks to assists from Jakub Viedemann and Kent Lee with 7:35 to play in the first. The Cougars tacked on another score before the end of the period as King's (1-3-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) trailed, 2-1, at the first intermission.

Gerstein knotted the score again at the 15-minute mark of the second period, this time an even-strength goal on helpers from Viedemann and Erik Borschevsky, but the Cougars found a gap in the King's defense to tally their third score and hold a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period.

Despite holding an 8-6 edge in shots in the final period and an early goal from Chatham, the Monarchs were unable to find their equalizers before falling, 4-2, in UCHC play in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

Gerstein tallied two scores on a team-high seven shots with eight face off wins and two blocks, while Viedemann added two points on a pair of assists. Luke Babilon added six shots for the offense, while Kevin Martin led the Monarchs in the face off circle with 13 wins on 21 attempts. Defensively, Mauro D'Alessandro blocked five shots and Borschevsky added three blocks, while Tyler Sayger thwarted 33 attempts in the net.

Four different Cougars scored in the win, while Camden Smith assisted twice. Carson Grainer matched Gerstein's seven-shot effort, while Bekk McClaine went 11-for-17 in the face off circle. Louis Finnegan posted a 33-save effort in the win in goal for Chatham.

King's was slightly edged in the shot column in the loss, 37-35, while posting a 17-15 win in blocks.

The Monarchs will return home to host Neumann University in their first home series of the 2023-24 season, beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Revolution Ice Centre.
