Burke Tallies Hat Trick as Women's Lacrosse Drops Home Opener to Wilson

WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 1, 2023) --- The Kings's College women's lacrosse team dropped their 2023 home opener, falling to visiting Wilson College 10-4 on Wednesday afternoon from McCarthy Stadium. With the loss, King's falls to 0-3 on the season, while Wilson improves to 2-0.
 
Wilson (2-0) started quickly, as Jill Ahlgren scored just over a minute into the contest to put the Phoenix up 1-0 at 13:59. King's (0-3) responded just over a minute later, as sophomore Chloe Burke connected on the free position shot, to tie the game at one with 12:49 remaining. King's wasted no time jumping in front, as Burke notched her second goal of the game just 15 seconds later, putting the Monarchs up 2-1. Midway through the opening quarter, sophomore Grace Venis extended the King's lead, putting the Monarchs up 3-1 at 7:21. Late in the quarter Wilson got a goal back, as Sage Lague found the back of the net at 2:16, as King's lead 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Monarchs pushed the lead back to two goals, as Burke completed her hat trick on another free position shot, putting King's up 4-2 at 8:32. Once again Wilson scored a late goal to cut the deficit as Paige Reynolds scored at 2:05 to make it a 4-3 game at halftime. Wilson scored three times in the third quarter to take a 6-4 advantage, heading to the fourth quarter. The Phoenix extended the lead further, scoring four unanswered goals in the final frame, to take the contest 10-4.
 
Junior Sidney Bush got the start in the cage, finishing with three saves on six shots in the first half, before senior Jessie Smalley came on for the second half, making three saves on ten shots. Burke led the offense, tallying three points on the afternoon, finishing with three goals. The Monarchs were strong on draws, controlling 11 of 18, led by Burke, who controlled six, and first-year Maria Schneider, who controlled two. King's finished the afternoon forcing eight turnovers, led by sophomore Ashley Dias, who caused three, while the Monarchs collected 26 ground balls, led by Burke's five. King's finished the contest, going 2-5 on free position shots.
 
Delaney Fulfer got the start in goal, finishing with three saves on seven shots, before being replaced by Krystal Kienast in the second half, who stopped all five shots she faced. The Phoenix had three players tally three points, as Lague and Emily Young both tallied three goals, and Ahlgren added two goals and an assist. Wilson controlled seven of 18 draws, forced nine turnovers, collected 22 ground balls, and finished 1-3 on free position shots.
 
King's continues it's four-game homestand on Saturday as the Monarchs host Keystone College at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
