Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, MD (March 4, 2023) -- In the start to their weekend trip, the King's College baseball team posted thrilling wins by scores of 12-6 and 5-4 over Rosemont College at The Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Md. With the sweep, the Monarchs improve to 3-1, while the Ravens drop to 1-4.

Game 1 – W, 12-6:
Rosemont (1-4) got on the board in the bottom of the first as they strung together three straight hits to plate the first run of the game. The Ravens continued their momentum in the inning as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but a strikeout from
Zach Day put a stop to the inning as King's (3-1) trailed 4-0 after one.

The Monarchs answered in the second as back-to-back lead off singles from
Justin Richards and
Brennen Schneider set up a two-run, two-out double from
Jacob Sutton as King's cut the deficit to just 4-2 after the second. Day made quick work of the Ravens in the bottom half of the inning as he struck out two of three.

After a quick top of the third, Rosemont plated another run in the bottom of the third, pushing their lead to 5-2. The fourth inning saw just two base runners reach safely before an exciting fifth featured a lead off double from Day before
Brandon Loner singled to left field to put runners on the corners. An RBI from Richards drove in Day, and a two-out single from
Gregory Ahlstrom plated Loner to pull King's within one, 5-4, after the top of the fifth.

The Ravens answered in the bottom of the inning, tacking on another run on an RBI double, but a heads-up defensive play from Loner saw King's eliminate another possible run as Loner threw out Rosemont's Ethan Wood at home on a sacrifice bunt to keep the score at 6-4 heading into the sixth.

The King's offense would explode for eight runs in the sixth. A hit-by-pitch from
Nick Ciszak and consecutive walks from
Chase Yochem and Day set up an RBI single from Loner. The Ravens would go to their bullpen and make a change, but Richards drove in two on a single to left as the Monarchs took the lead, 7-6. A sacrifice fly from
Will Hronich and singles from Sutton, Ciszak, and Yochem plated the final runs of the innings as the King's lead swelled to 12-6.

Christian Galimi would enter the game in the bottom of the sixth and the King's defense took care of three-of-four batters in the inning. The Monarchs would put two runners on in the top of the seventh in an attempt to increase their advantage but would come up short. The Ravens would have one final chance to make their comeback, but a fly outs to Richards and Yochem and a strikeout delivered by Galimi would put an end to the game and secure the 12-6 victory for King's in the opener.

Several Monarchs recorded multi-hit games in the win, led by Sutton who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run, while Richards went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ciszak, Day, and Ahlstrom would all also score twice for King's. Day was strong on the mound as the starter, throwing 5.0 innings and only allowing four earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Galimi had a solid outing in 2.0 innings of relief, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out one.

Rosemont was led by a 2-for-3 effort from Samson Gerner who also drove in two runs. Additionally, Ethan Wood recorded two doubles in the loss for Rosemont. Zach Nutley was awarded the start for the Ravens and went 4.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Game 2 – W, 5-4:
Another exciting match up in the doubleheader saw King's jump out early this time, plating two runs in the first thanks to RBIs from Day and Richards to put the Monarchs ahead, 2-0. The second inning saw similar success as the Monarchs saw two more cross on a one-out, two-RBI single to center field from Ciszak as the King's lead jumped to 4-0 after just two innings of play.

Rosemont responded in the bottom of the third as they got two back on a double from Ethan Wood, but the King's defense responded as they retired the next three batters to maintain their 4-2 advantage. After a slow fourth innings, Rosemont knotted the contest at 4-4 on a two-RBI single from Dominic Fernicola. Both teams were able to retire all three batters faced in the sixth to set up an exciting seventh inning.

Ciszak started the inning strong with a leadoff single before advancing to third on a single to left field from Yochem. It was Day who would deliver the winning run on an infield groundout. The Monarchs defense took care of business in the bottom of the inning, retiring all three Ravens on ground outs, to secure the 5-4 win in the night cap on Saturday.

Ciszak led King's with a 2-for-3 effort, adding two RBIs and two runs, while Yochem and
Michael Marmolejos both added two hits each. Day also drove in two for the Monarchs.
Matt Martin was strong in the start, going 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts and just two earned runs, while
Will Hronich helped secure the win in the final 2.0 innings, allowing no hits and no runs with two strikeouts.

Ethan Wood had a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a double, two RBIs, and a run to lead Rosemont. The Ravens' starter in David McKinney threw for 4.0 innings, allowing three earned runs, while Vinny Mattio picthed the final inning in relief and gave up the winning run on two hits.

The Monarchs will make their next stop on their three-day trip as they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet. The doubleheader with the Bisons is set to begin at noon at Hoy Field.
